19142-100 - Stokely-Van Camp Set
Posted by Jark K. Remol on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 7:14 PM

Does anyone have any details about outfit # 19142-100, the Stokely-Van Camp Set?

When I was young my folks bought two 2nd-hand sets from a neighbor boy. I have the box and all the parts for outfit #11490, but the other set seemed to be missing parts and no box. From what I've been able to piece together the only outfit that contained the 638-2361 Van Camp's box car was # 19142-100. I'm trying to figure out what rolling stock I'm missing.

What I have: 237 2-4-2 scout w/1060T tender; 638-2361 Van Camp's box car; 6045 tank car; 6042 gondola; 6167 Unlettered Red Caboose. I also have a small black unnumbered cube transformer which is probably just a 45w (1025?).

What I think I'm missing: 6406 Flat Car w/ Yellow Auto; 3309 Turbo Missile Launching Car.

The only other outfits that I could find that contained the 237 2-4-2 is #11351 and #11470, but the rolling stock in these don't closely match what I have.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

More than one set included the Van Camp's boxcar. I have a different.uncataloged set, documented in the Project Roars Uncataloged set book, that included the car.

Thanks! I just ordered the uncatalogged book. My one book with catalogged sets doesn't list any that have the Van Camp's car. Hopefully I can figure out which set I've got.

The Stokely car also is interesting due to the number on it.  It is a good one to keep.

Fear not! I have no intention of getting rid of it.

And the number makes it tough to find in price guides. You have to look under 638 and igmore everything after the hyphen and then you can find it.

Maybe you were not aware but the number is not consistent with Lionels post war numbering system.  William Stokely, who owned Stokely Van Camp at the time had Lionel put the company phone number on the car.

Excellant! I didn't know about the phone number!

That's part of why I'm trying to do this research since I've found little info about this set so far.

Now i'm also curious how the neighbor boy ended up with such a curious set. I may have to ask him. He's still friends with my older brother.

Got the Project Roar Lionel's Promotional Outfits book today.

There were 40 different outfits that had the 237 2-4-2 scout. Of those, only 3 had the 6045 tank car (orange). Of those, only 1 had the Van Camp's box car -- outfit #19224. I think we've got a winner!

I don't appear to be missing any rolling stock. The photo in the book shows a red unmarked 6067 caboose, whereas mine is an unmarked brown. The track and the transformer also seem to match what I have.

The big thing that I'm missing, and is pretty scarce for this outfit anyway, is the 908-10 cardboard Scenic Station w'Tunnels pack. Whether the original owner ever got one or not I'll never now. I think I'm also missing the operation and layout instruction sheets, and certainly missing the cardboard billboards.

Thanks to everyone that gave suggestions!

Jark,

Glad the book was of help!

Sorry I don't actively monitor this board or I  would have got back to you sooner.  Nice job on the "reverse outfit lookup".  Tough to do, but the appendix I added sounded like it was of help.  In writing the book, I have the entire Lionel records in an database and I built a reverse look up query.  It really helps trying to figure out outfits when they show up like yours did.  I ran a quick query and the only other outfit that comes close is 19242.  It has some additional items, but likely not the 19224 you have.

One note, in 1963, Lionel must have received a deal on brown and green plastic.  You'll find a lot of 6067-25's in brown instead of read during that year.  See 19225 on the following page of my book.  Also, that is the year brown and green autos started to show up (see 19228) as well as brown cable reels.

Now you can have the fun of looking for a 19224 box on eBay.  They do show up.

Thanks for purchasing my book and glad it was of help.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me offline.
