Does any one know of a K3a Mikado engine ? This engine is a friends and he ask me if I wanted it .  The train was a xmas  gift in 1937. The owners were lost in 2 wars , w2 & korea .  The train has been stored since 1953.  Is this a treasure or just a looker?   No  brand name . It is said to be O gauge.  Would it have to be rewired , or a new motor? No power supply  is known of , or other cars.  The track would be 3 rail , yes?     Louie told me if I don't want train ( in the trash) heaven forbid . Any answer would be interesting  for me . Maybe launch my new railroad .

Grab it before it is gone forever. Then worry about what it is. If it is 3 rail it should have some pickups for the 3rd rail. If it is 2 rail, then an ohm meter should tell you as the left and right drivers will be insulated. See if you can get it and post a picture. Bruce Baker

Pre WW II "O" gauge is very collectible.  In this pre-plastic era, most ran on "outside third rail".  An arm would extend out on each side from between the drivers to pick up power.  That type of pickup was even provided on the Lionel 700E Hudson, attach center rail rollers or outside arms.   A lot of the Pre-War locomotives had cast brass boiler castings.

 Bruce and Don ; thank you for the info. The engine and tender is included in the estate  liquidation  ( sale) . I am trying to find out who the folks are .  My friend is a friend of the family who is left .Maybe ? Louie has his pick of items.  I will certainly let you know whats going on. I too say to grab it!  It might be Ives or American Flyer as A.F. was three rail O gauge before WW2. Most important is to either post a photo or get a number from it and post the number. Most Ives & Lionel pre-war trains used pin and box couplers.

Can't tell much without the engine in front of you. Most likely it will need a small tune-up to get running again, mainly clean the brush & armature contact area and lightly lubricate the axles. Unless you see a wire broke in two don't touch the wires, in other words don't replace the wires until proven defective.

  An O gauge 2-8-2 Mikado would rule out any of the toy manufacturers - Ives, Lionel, Flyer, etc.  There were several O scale kit companies that offered a 2-8-2 but the only one that offered a model of a C&O K3a would have been the American Model Locomotive Co. (Ed Alexander).  This would most likely make your model pre-WWII and it would be either a 2 rail or an outside 3rd rail engine.  Either way it would be a find - if you can get it then do so....and if you get it try posting some pictures of it here - I, for one, would love to see it.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a call to New Hampshire and waiting to hear from friend Louie . He is the man in charge. Hope he didn't go out on a limb and it break . He didn't say if there will be a sale or auction . ~~~ Sometimes waiting can be intense ,  WHEW.

To all the fine folks who answered  my post . Much intrest was generated by myself and you folks.  This estate is  going to auction, house and contents.  No sealed bids or pre sales. This a disapointment.  My friend did not know at the time that everything was already cataloged. ~~~ Well you win a few and you lose some . Thank you to all.
