Bill, I think that's something only you can decide. there are a lot of determining sites on the internet, specially for Lionel. To my opinion, if this set is original, 86 dollars is something the seller won't sell his set for. The engine alone is on some of those determining sites prized for over 250 dollars.. And this set is with cars and boxed in to my opinion good condition.
What's reasonable to pay for it depends on yourself, I'm not going to advise in that. The only thing I know for sure is that 86 dollars is not a serious bid for that.

What sites do you suggest to ascertain the value of something like this? Are there any free online price guides available for Lionel train sets?

Bill, I am willing to bet that this set will fetch well over $500 no problem!!! It looks fantastic. Even the box is in nice shape.

The key piece is the flat with the rocket. That rocket should have a pencil sharpener in the nose cone. Be careful, and ask the seller about it, reproduction rockets have been made. The engine is the better variation with the stripes. Just those two pieces price out over $500, and with over 3 days left that price will definately move up, so get your wallet ready if you really want it.

By the way, since you posted this the reserve has been met, and it wasn't very high. The bidding is in the $150 range, but there is no point placing a bid now. If you want it you will need to be in there bidding right at the close. Good luck!!!

The set as shown is complete and correct for outfit #11341. However, you need to watch. The Locomotive is damaged, and the helicopter is damaged. This takes away from the value of the set greatly. The Post War market is soft except with EXCELLENT and better BOXED items. This set does not fall into that category with two key pieces damaged. You may be able to replace the loco, if you can find one and are willing to pay the price. It depends on how much you originally pay for the set if you get it. This auction may go pretty high, especially if bidders bid with their emotions instead of using their heads. The rocket flat #6407, if the rocket is original, and you should ask and get ensurances that it is genuine original Lionel from the original set (It will be marked STERLING, and have a pencil sharpener in the nose cone if its authentic). If this car is all original and intact it has a value close to $500 alone. The loco would be close to a $250 piece, but its broken so I'd lop of 50% right off the top. The other cars are good, but none are honestly over $100 each particulary the flat with helicopter having a broken helicopter.

If it is a starter set, you maybe surprised at how fast the bitting will go up on the last day.

The most valuable thing on this set is the box. All of the pieces are very common, and if the set brought much over $100 I would be surprised.

As for the set with the rocket, you can try to win it. Just set a limit as to how high you are willing to go. Watch and wait, the bidding may pass your limit in the final hour. If it doesn't, place a bid. Now I am very curious to see what this one goes for.

Those are very interesting Bill, especially the one with the box. Appearently the car was also offered seperately. I did a little checking, and it was also offered in a different set from the one that you first posted.

The one with the individual box was a no sale. My guess is that the reserve was $800, and the bidder was probing, and not really serious. $400 for a box seems steep. The piece offered by Stout had very high hopes, but fell well short. The estimate was up to $1300, but it did sell for $400.

Personally, I've never liked auctions where the starting price is set high, and then a buy it now is offered for a few dollars more, it just seems silly. Why not just start it low and have a reserve? High opens just scare people off.

Maybe $500 for that set is a deal if you can get it. Just under 3 days left, and the bidding is only half of that. Of course, like I said before, the real action will be at the end.[swg]

That explains a lot Bill. That was the fate of many a set, LOVED TO DEATH. And that is why some sets and pieces are so expensive today. Reduced supply, coupled with people wanting to relive their past. If only we had known.

With 18 hours left it has broken through the $300 level. I'm going to try and watch the final half hour live, it should have more action than most TV shows.[swg]

Don't worry about it guys, even if this an advertisement to try and boost the price, a thought which had crossed my mind, it is fairly harmless. It has been truley fun to watch thus far, and it is an interesting test of the marketplace for postwar trains. I honestly think that this exercise has more value than all of those price guides. Beside, this topic hasn't had that many viewings or responses other than mine, until this morning, and I'm not in the market so I'm not bidding.[swg]

Silly me, I thought $400 for an empty box was absurd. This one went for over $600.

At least with the auction in question, you get some trains for your money. With just over 3 hours to go the bid is $765. In my opinion we are close to top dollar for the set in this condition, but someone may be willing to spend more. Stranger things have happened.

Bill, what happened to the links to those other auctions, the no sale and the Stout, I can't even find them on eBay?
