With the emphasis on "early" layouts, in CTT. I was thinking of my "early layouts". The timeframe is the late 70's, we had just gotten married, and had purchased our first house. One bedroom was allocated as "The Train Room". The trainset I had as a child, didn't make our families migration to Calif. in the 60's. So I had began purchasing trains (MPC) in the mid seventies. I also came across a rather large collection at a very low price.
This was the layout;
The photography is really bad, I will need to work on seeing what I can do to repair. The layout was essentially 4x10. At the time I did not know of ANY train club, association, or meets. Did have a subscription to CTT, but it was only published like everyother month or so. My "collection" consisted of MPC and some pw.
A couple of comments about some of the cars above;
- Very top shelf is an AF Little Joe, I think I sold that for around $50, (It was in a collection I had acquired, and had no "need" for it ! Sure wish I had it now.) The Torpedo just below it, I had Keith Woodward refurbish. On the 5 row down, just behind the 75th Anniv. Special is the TTOS convention car I just sent around in the CTT Car Exchange. (That was the first big show I ever attended.)
- All the motorized units and the post war on the bottom row were part of a collection I acquired. The situation was my wifes' best friend's Dad was an insurance writer. He had received all the motorized, accys on the layout, post war cars, 747 Hudson, and much more in some deal. They were all NEW in the box. When he died, his wife offered to sell them to me. I took the Greenberg Guide, cataloged them, and the value was over $5k. Told her I couldn't afford to buy them, but would help sell them. She insisted I buy them at what ever price I could afford. That was tough!!
The "quality" of my collection surely wasn't very high. I purchased the 44 Ton switcher, the Blue SF switcher, and the 2 Texas Specials from 2 different avid collectors. I was so anxious to learn, I paid premium prices and they were their junkers. They sure saw me coming!
The quality of the pictures, and the content isn't much. But, I've enjoyed sharing. Things have certainly changed!! The friends I've met since are invaluable. The information, product availability, shows, clubs, meets, WOW !! What a change ! I love it !

Nice photos guys. Bill, says Photobucket removed your images. Don, great shots and story line. I too have made some good friends here and learned alot from putting to practice the knowledge gained from the same lot as you. Also, great how we have shared our other interests to help folks along the way with everything from plumbing to dry wall. Tis a good place.

Thanks Harold, the old man an lady in my chicken farm scene depict my Aunt and Uncle who had a large chicken farm.
It was a memorable time staying with them when I was just a young boy.
It is a way to remember people and places.

I'm very much behind the eight ball with these...Here is DougM's Inspection Car making the rounds on the SQFSRR inspecting the tunnel portals, and bridges for proper clearance.
Jon's John Deere boxcar... this was one I was sorry to see leave the railroad. Very nice car!
And this month's visitor was a very nice car from California. Seems Don decided to send his favorite car across country to avoid any chance it would be damaged during this year's forest fires.
