How do you remove this little bugger without breaking it??? I have tried prying on it a bit but it feels like it is going to break in half....thanks all
They usually break during removal. Why do you need to remove it anyway? If the wire that is soldered to it is bad, it can be reached by removing the eunit. If the rollers, arms, or springs are bad, they can be replaced with the shoe in place by removing the clip at the end of each pin that hold the collector arms. Removing the entire shoe just sets you up for more headaches.
I agree with Jim. I cannot think of an instance where I would want to remove the bottom plate, unless the whole pickup assembly was torn off. It is very difficult to install a new one. At one time, replacement plates only had mounting lugs along one side. I am not certain how the manufacturer intended them to be used, but I ended up cuttin a slit at right angles to the slots on one side, and bending the frame above (below when upside-down) in to create a lip to catch the plate from going in too far, and then bending the frame below (above when upside-down) to keep the plate from coming back out. This repair certainly killed any collector value on that motor assembly. But it worked!I don't know for certain, but I think the plates came from Lionel (modern era)
