?Recalled sparking plastic steam engine early 70s?
Posted by Boyd on Monday, June 8, 2009 2:37 AM

Anyone on here get or seen a plastic steam engine that I once had from the early 70s? It was a gift to me as a young boy about 4-6 years old and then the government recalled them because some had set carpets on fire. It was maybe up to 12" long, clear plastic outer case,, multi-colored gears  on the inside. You wound it up and it moved along the floor without tracks throwing lots of sparks into the air. I absolutely loved the thing but my parents returned it when it was recalled.

Sounds like maybe a Marx or an off-brand friction motor toy. Perhaps an Asian toy import.

It's very dificult to burn carpeting.  Even with kerosene & a Bernz-O-Matic.

That almost sounds like experience speaking Rob.........

As for the sparking locomotive, I think I remember seeing them in Sears or Wards catalogs, maybe?

As an arson investigator for the insurance companies, I try to keep up on what really burns and what doesn't.

As another example, you'd be surprised at what kerosene heaters get blamed for that they are rarely at fault for.

You really do have experience.  I was hoping to maybe prompt the telling of an amusing, in 20-20 hind sight, sort of childhood story:)

I'll ask my parents if they remember where they bought it.
