Bagage Car for 2421-2423 Passenger set
Posted by Civil War on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 5:23 PM

I have a nice set of NYC F3 engines and a set of passenger pullmans. I recall seeing in the real world a car placed between the engines and pullmans that was used to carry extra baggage and possibly some light freight. Can anyone recommend a car that I could use for the purpose. Would a box car be appropriate? Is there a baggage car that would fit in with this set? I prefer to run only postwar Lionel cars, but might consider another car if it would look right. Thanks.

On the NYC water level route,  it could have been one of these:

Thanks Rob. I like the suggestion, but how about something like this.

It is a box car instead of a Reefer. Anyone know where I can get info on modern era Lionel trains, similar to the Postwar Lionel Trains Library? Does this car have plastic trucks and couplers etc?

Thanks

That's the 16237 from 1992.  It's the non-operating version of the 16649 RailSounds boxcar from the same time.  They both have sprung, die-cast metal trucks.

How about the Lionel Union Pacific "Romeo" Baggage Car 6-16068:

Lionel also made a 6-16069 Union Pacific "New Haven" combination Baggage car, but I can't seem to find a photo.

There doesn't seem to have been an actual baggage car that matched those streamliners.  So I second the alternative of an express car.  I have a green K-Line "BLT 5-90" 6464-style car marked "RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY   NYC   R.E.X. 7506".  It has sprung cast-metal trucks.  I couldn't find a picture to post; but I found a record of one new in the box having sold for $22 at auction.

The RailSounds boxcar, #16649, according to Greenberg's price guide has steam sounds, so it won't compliment a diesel set properly.

The 16650 has diesel sounds and is painted for NYC as well.

I found one of these on ebay "Buy it Now" $135.00. How does this work? Will it work with the old fasioned 0-27 system I use. I have a ZW transformer. No electronics. Do I just flip the switch and it makes sounds like a diesel engine? That would be pretty cool.

Thanks to all for the great suggestions.

Works great with the ZW.  Here is the Owners Manual that explains it all.

I second Rob's comments - I have Railbox version with diesel sounds and it works great with ZW. Nice engine sounds, horn, bell, & crew talk. Dont know if $135 is good price, but I always liked the NYC pacemaker paint scheme.
