Changing shells of a GP 20

Can I take the shell of a 1980's Lionel GP20 and put it on a newer version Lionel GP 20 platform? I know someone on the forum would know!

The body shell dimensions and the frames are the same, the only issue may be screw holes on the body.

Rob, I'm not positive, but I'd be willing to gander that Lionel has changed the GP-20 too. I know the U36B was changed with the Conrail one back a few years ago: that shell now is mounted with screws from beneath the frame as opposed to the usual two screws that go on the ends of the engine shell and connect with folded up bends in the sheet metal frame.

You'd have to make some modifications to the shell or the frame to do what you are thinking. It can be done, but you'll have to do some work. It would be much easier to swap out shells here from similar-era products.

Thanks for the feedback.  That's what I was afraid of.  Of course I like the paint scheme of the 80's era engine..but the modern electronics etc.  My best bet is to compare the two at a train show or local train shop before I start bidding on these units.

How about just adding new electronics to the 80's GP20?  There are quite a few upgrade options available that would add TMCC, sound, lighting, and even cruise control.

I might be wrong but I believe the 80 model has screw holes in the noses and the newer ones have screw holes from the bottom of the frame coming up into the cab. The part of adding newer electronics is a very good idea and might acually be easier than trying to get a new frame to fit an old shell
