I have recently aquired a Lionel 1664. It looks like someone has replaced at least one of the wheels in the past. The wheels were not quartered correctly and there are some interesting additions in the spacers for the rod linkage. Not having a parts sheet for this locomotive it's difficult for me to say actually what was original. I understand the prewar parts and instruction sheets do not have exploded diagrams like the postwar. Do they give anything other than a list of part numbers that would be of use?
As I'm probably going to have to pull a wheel, is there a recommended puller for this job? I am also looking into the wheel cups to press these back on and any advice here would be greatly appreciated

Well the saga of the 1664 has been interesting. So it looks like someone put a non-hub wheel where a hub wheel was supposed to go. Not only are there some "aftermarket" spacers, it appears that the drive rods do not belong to this engine. I opened up the tender to find duct tape on the whistle body. The bracket holding the solenoid was broken. The tender looks just like the other 2226W I have (I think I got the number tight this time) but has no identification marks and has a plastic body.
The good news is Olsen's has everything I need including a complete set of drive rods. I am going to send the wheel in for them to match once I pull it. I got a pretty good deal on this engine and I like to fix stuff anyway, so all in all this is a win/win scenario.
And the Lucas Red and Tacky grease? Great stuff. The 2026 is rolling much quieter now.
