100th Post
Posted by 8ntruck on Friday, April 17, 2009 10:30 PM

The counter says that this is my 100th post.   Oooooooooooooooo.

Just an idle thought here.  Most of the folks here on this forum are running equipment that ranges from brand new to 50 or 70 years old.

I'm wondering if today's electronic marvels are still going to be going in 20 or 30 or 50 years.

As well as the equipment still running that is 50+ years old. Can you imagine a standard/ wide gauge layout still running at 125+ years?

Today's electronics will be obsolete five minutes from now.  To keep the newest trains running so many years down the road they will either have to be gutted of their circuit boards and converted back to conventional operation, or a market in repro and update boards will have to develop.

I won't be alive in 50 years so I'll let my sons or grandkids worry about cicuit boards . But the realism and sounds I'll enjoy till my end opened a whole new world of trains up ! I can't imagine the new options that they'll have in them in 10 years ... it's getting unbelievable . The new engines Lionel are developing are so close to real ... it's crazy . At the way last models circuit systems are dumping in prices ... we'll be able to have a few laying around for spares anyway . The detail and realistic looks let alone the sound features really antiquate the old pill smokers .

I may think in the past but to me I bet a lot of these electronics will die before they hit 20 years where the old originals will still be going strong. I presently have a standard gauge set from 1934 which makes it 75 years old and it still runs like a top. great running engine. I also have engines fomr the 50's that are great runners and yes I have a few of the tmcc engines which I'm thinking of letting go as I may just go back to the old conventional deal not sure right now.
