Williams Sound Problem
Posted by stubbsO on Friday, November 14, 2008 1:39 PM

I need some input. I have a 2 Locos that the Bell won't ring no matter what, Horn works fine. These are Williams that I bought about 6 months before the buy-out and have now gotten them outta the box to run. The locos in question are a NH EP-5 and a CNW NW-2. I was told by a reputable LHS to flip the 2 wires at the track, all that did was make the horn blow when I push the bell button, and still no bell with pushing the horn button. Is this a factory faux pas or something else? I have 4 other Williams that both horn/bell work fine. Power is Lionel "Z" trans using Lionel Cab-1 with TPC 400. Thanks

Are you sure the sound boards in question supported a bell function?

Yea Chuck, they should! I have 2 NW2's and 1 of them has it. Have you ever heard of true balst having 1 and not the other? I know I haven't, not to say that it's not true, but just doesn't make sense.

If you call Bachmann and tell them whats what they may offer to replace or may ask if you feel you could and send you the boards as it sounds like it may be the boards. If they want you to return and pay the shipping plus the fee what ever it is now I would check with a hobby shop first as it easy to replace and there only like $20.00 each I believe thats cheaper than sending and then paying like $35.00 each to have them do it and send back to you.

They should be covered under warranty but before you contact Williams/Bachman, see if you can get them to trip off of the Z directly or if you have another power supply try it.

You would need to by pass the TPC to run the test.  Also, when they had you flip the track wires were you flipping the feed from the ZW to the TPC or the TPC to the track?

Im waiting for them to reply from WBB on what they have to say. How would I trip them directly at the transf, need more info on how to do that. I switched wires at the lock-on and no where else.

You can't.  The Z doesn't have a whistle controller.

Sorry, Bob is correct.  I thought your reference to a  "Z" was a ZW not a real Z.  If you have a real Z the only way to test is to use the add on/external sound activation buttons.

Since you have other locomotives that work with your current setup, I think we can skip any further testing and go right to contacting Wiliams about getting the boards swapped.
