15" Madisons vs. Streamliners

15" Madisons vs. Streamliners

Hello All,

I went back and looked through some old posts, but didn't see anything that was definitive either way.  I am looking for passenger cars for a 2046 Hudson/2046 Tender. I am torn between the Williams 15" Madison Passeneger cars OR the Williams 0-27 Streamliners. Can anyone tell me if either was more realistic/prototypical? 

The other side to this dilemma is my 2046 "had" Magnetraction many many moons ago, but is very weak now.  I currently pull a set of 4 PRR 0-27 Streamliners behind it, and there is some wheel slippage.  I was wondering since a set of 4 Madison Cars is longer (heavier) than a set of 4 Streamliners, can I expect there to be more slippage?  Hope that made senseSmile [:)]

The newer Williams cars will have needle point axles and Fast Angle wheel sets and will require less pulling power.  The 2046 was usually sold with freight sets so neither choice will match anything in a catalog. 

In terms of what a Hudson around WW2 would be pulling, either choice would be OK.  The engine is slightly undersized (marketed as an O-27 loco).  The Madisons might "look" better, especially on O-31 or larger curves.  If you are running on O-27, the shorter streamliners will look better on curves.

Barney,

I pull seven MTH 15" Madisons with a 2018 2-6-4 without Magnatraction on 042 Realtrax curves. It works on 031 but my line is short and it doesn't look good chasing its tail. I also use an MTH 2-8-0 without any problems. I use a KW for power as all cars are lighted. I guess it depends only on the look you want. Good luck.

How much longer and taller is a scale Hudson and tender like the 773 versus the 2046 and 2046W?

The 773 is about 13 1/2 inches from the front of the pilot to the coupler hook, 14 inches from the front of the pilot to the end of the cab roof, and 3 7/8 inches high.  The 2426W tender is 9 1/4 inches between coupler pulling faces and 3 5/8 inches high.

Thanks, Bob.  Anyone have a 2046 and a 2046W tender handy enough to provide the length and height dimensions like Bob did for the 773?  Mine is packed away.

A 2046W stands 3.0" high when set on a table (not on track) and is 8 3/8" long, body only - not including couplers.
