Z-Stuff for Trains Comes Through
Posted by Roger Bielen on Thursday, March 11, 2004 7:06 AM
All too frequently we see posts critical of products, manufacturers, or service. I'd like to offer a positive comment for Dennis Zander of Z-Stuff for Trains. He went that extra mile in helping me solve a problem with a DZ-1011 circuit I set up.

For a bit of background. I'm using two 1011's in parallel to trip a 1008 relay to activate a pair of flashing crossing signals. For those unfamiliar with the 1011 it's a block signal with an IR train detector. If installed in true parallel both 1011's would change green to red as a pair, mine are on parallel tracks and act independently. To isolate, diodes are added to the circuit.

The problem occured when I upgraded accessory transformers and the 1011's stopped pulling in the relay. I e-mailed Dennis and he had me send the 1011's back, they bench tested ok. He also called me to discuss the problem and offer suggestions. After returning the 1011's to me I set up my circuit on the work bench and all worked ok, installed them on the layout, no go.

I tried my workbench transformer powering this circuit only and it worked. Tried another transformer, no go. After a couple of e-mails Dennis suggested boosting the voltage, ususally the 1011's operate in the 12 to 14 V range. Hooked up a different transformer and creeped up on the voltage to 15V, success. It appears that the diodes in the circuit increase the voltage need, Dennis' hypothisis.

As to why the circuit worked with one transformer and not the other, I guessing that one is a newer electonic type and the other is an old winding type. I use an older analog VOM and have heard/read that the newer electronic transformers can give false readings unless a load, light bulb, is in the circuit.

Once again thanks Dennis.

Right on Roger! Folks should know that those 1011's are pretty nifty just on their own. And the price is right too.

Though for folks using 027 track without a roadbed, I have found you need to dig out a hole in the layout surface so that work the best. When I say hole, more like a recess, maybe about 3/16" deep. No more than a 1/4 inch. The 1011 also has to be pretty close to the track - you certainly can't put them on a 027 curve.

I've heard nothing but praise for these and the other Z-stuff products.

Can they get replacement parts? My son broke one of our crossing arm's by accident
while working on the layout. It happens.[oops]
Thanks
