Track Banking
Posted by traindaddy1 on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 5:43 PM
I posted this question on the Model Forum and thought I'd ask it here: Do you bank your track (Like NASCAR) on the curves or do you just lay flat track?  As always, many thanks.

Mine is flat. I do like the look of elevated track providing it's a very long gradual curve. Something say in the 0 130 range. As stated on sharp turns it does tend to look Nascar like. If you are after this look and on portion of my layout I later wished I had incorporated it. Is simply after you lay your roadbed of cork. Lay a piece if N gauge roadbed on the outer edge. This will superelevated you curve and once ballasted will look fine.

I super elevated all my mainline curves and not sorry one bit at the time command control was a glimmer in the makers eye so to keep fast freights on the track and off the floor so now I can run Lionels fastest steamer or diesel full bore and it just keeps on a truck'in baby. try a curve elevated and see if you like the look I'm sure you'll do all the rest.

If you decide to bank your track an easy way to shim the track is to use wire under the outside edge of the ties.  I used 12 ga. on mine, but you can go larger, or smaller as you desire.

Flat now but old layout had banked curves.  Just start easy and go on up and then ease back down.
