X6454 Boxcar built 9-44 ??
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 30, 2004 3:11 PM
Hello there
I have a tan/brown X6454 boxcar that is marked "new 9-44".
It is also marked NYC 15900.
I thought that no Lionels were made during WW II.
Was this one built during WW II ?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joe

According to Greenberg's, the X6454 NYC, both tan and brown were catalogued/produced for 1948.

The Greenbery guide says the tan version is worth $15 good, $27 excellent and the brown one is worth $17 good, $50 excellent.

Built dates on toy trains don't often reflect when the actual train was built. Often it's just a date that looks good. Sometimes on older Lionel items the built date is when the train was first built, but that isn't the case with this one. On newer trains the built dates on rolling stock is almost never when it was actually built, but rather when the car it's modeled after was built, so that it looks realistic. The reason the built dates are on is because in real life all freight cars have them.
