The track cleaning cars do work but to what degree is questionable. Some track is just more dirty then others so you may not get good results all the way around your layout. Other people will swear by them as the best thing since sliced bread!
One thing for sure with any track cleaning car you need a good heavy hauling locomotive to pull it, sometimes you may have to add more weight to the track cleaning car.
I bought a track cleaning car a few months ago from the post that was here then.

You may want to add some lead weights or magnets for weight if it has a steel frame to the boxcar so it works better and the wheels stay on the track. An unweighted boxcar with masonite or anything else will derail quickly and be dragged around for a little.
