looking for MTH NYC Aerotrain set
Posted by NYCGreg on Sunday, January 6, 2008 8:22 AM

Hey everyone !

I've been looking for some time for an MTH NYC Aerotrain w/PS 2.0 sound.  I saw these when they came out and I passed, and now I'm kicking myself in the, well you know.  If anyone has a lead on a set, please let me know.  Not willing to spend an arm and a leg, but maybe just an arm. I hope this type of message doesn't conflict with the rules of the forum.  Just would like that set.

Thanks

Greg

Greg,

You might try here, according to the MTH web site he has one (as of 1/3/08). Dont know how much he wants for it.

They do come up on Ebay fairly often, so try a search. I picked up one of the last locosound U.P. aero sets (at least according to the product finder) and I really love it. Excellent set, especially if you can get at least one extra car. Oh, don't forget to heavily lube the pass car wheels. Here's probably the one time you really want to put more than one drop on the axles. They don't roll very well.

Perhaps a real newbie question, but what is the train in the REAR of this photo?

Hello, Lady:
That streamlined train would be a model of the Boston and Maine RR's Flying Yankee. This was I think the 3rd real streamlined diesel train made in the U.S., but don't quote me. It is a twin of the Burlington's Zephyr, and both were built in 1935. The other of the three would be Union Pacific's M-10000, which was made by a different company and looked completely different.

The real Flying Yankee is still under restoration in New Hampshire. The Zephyr, later named the Pioneer Zephyr is at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The M-10000 was scrapped sometime during World War II in a scrap drive, if I remember correctly.

I got to see one of the two Aerotrains in the RR Museum in Green Bay, WI. I forget where the other one is displayed. It's funny that both of these "failed" trains were saved from the scrap-heap, but not one Hudson. Joe

Some nice period shots are available on ebay. Sorry about the watermark.
