control panel-remotes

       hello all I was at train layout and started thinking that light years ago control panels and toggle switches were the norm. now we have command control and remotes to run trains so we can move with our trains on the layout. and then it hit me all we've done is disconnected the control panel to move with us in our hand and so we push buttons instead of throwing toggle switches so in fact were still using a control panel of sort. so are we having as much fun now as then? for me its both I miss seeing the control panel and using it and yet I like the newer command control devices and the bells and whistles that come in them. what are your thoughts on this?

I've also moved to remote controlled operation through a cab-1 remote and modern ZW. While I hide the bricks and SC-whatever's, I still have a control panel. I have all my switches still wired to their controllers. I also am using lighted toggle switches to control blocks. A fully lit control panel is as important to me as a lighted layout. All those green and red lights on the control panel make me feel important!

I like the old way too, with lots to look at and to keep one's hands busy.  But I gotta admit that there's a certain "wow" factor with remote operation.  I never fail to get a reaction when I push a couple of buttons on my DCS remote and my layout lighting switches from day to night.  I don't think control panels will ever be obsolete though.

I like the walk around feature. It really depends on the layout too. I used to have a center cockpit control. Now I have a L shape layout around the walls, so it helps to have all the controls at your finger tips rather than running back and forth.

Have a main panel and then separate smaller panels where needed

No remote here.  I don't even use a remote for the TV if I can help it.

I like the remote for light duty train running (And sitting fat in my recliner on Christmas morning!) so I can watch the train from around the layout.  But if I were to be into some heavy duty switching, shunting, freighting etc...I would rather do it from a well placed control panel with hard switches.  I find hard control panels offer superior tactile advantages when it comes to quick and efficient operating.  CAB-1 can be a "heads-down" nightmare if you haven't got the damn thing memorized; plus sometimes you push the button but nothing happens...RF gremlins? 

I always use the remote for the TV...ALWAYS.
