Denny - Sorry don't have any information, but thought a reply might keep this post from falling off the bottom of the page.  You may want to try the other forum also.  Also do a google search.. good luck.

There's a diagram in Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manual for Lionel Trains 1945-1969. It's on page 387, at least in my copy (which is an older version, but as far as I've been able to tell, the only thing that changes from one "edition" to the next is the cover photo).

This book is readily available on-line, eBay, in many hobby shops, etc. Almost everything in it consists of (reduced-size) reprints of Lionel service manual pages, but the 165 wiring diagram appears to have been specially drawn for the book.

I don't have a scanner, or I'd send or post a copy -- maybe someone else can do that.

I was hoping to make a controller for a 165 using 4 pushbutton and a toggle switch, got a nice crane but no switch. Just found a diagram and don't see how I can, looks like I need to connect different combations of 3 wires for left, right, up and down. Anybody ever do this? By the way I changed the title of this post.

I'm on my way out the door this morning, but I'll scan and post a wiring diagram this afternoon.

Thank you for emailing me the diagram. I guess making my own controller is out as each movement of the crane needs a combnation of three wires to work. Never saw a switch with three legs. Thanks to all the responses,
Denny
