Baggage Smasher

Just got an A/F baggage smasher in very nice shape except the pad on the bottom of the man is worn out. He moves ok but dosen't turn well and he leans to the side. The pad is almost gone. It's kinda like carpet. What is the correct name for it, I can't search if I don't know what to call it! Anyone know where to get this or have a bit they would sell? Thanks for any help

I use Jeff kane for about 98% of all my parts hes very good . He would be able to toell you the name of the part most likely and have the part on top of that to boot. you can call him at 585-229-2050 or email him (prefers to be called and if hes busy ( on another line and it may be a few ) he'll call you back. ) . may take 20 - 30 minutes but he will.

BAGGAGE !!! You ought to see what they do with a steel tool box full of tools! When I fly, they make a low pass over the airport, kick the tool box out then land.

Think they did the same to 3 of my roller bags in one year.

The little pads were originally referred to as "mohair" pads.  I have no idea if they really were mohair or not.  Many of the AF parts supply houses carry them.  Doug Peck at Portline Hobbies has them for $1 a pad, supposedly just like the original except for the color. Some have a "peel and stick" adhesive backing, others glue on.  I'd suggest something like rubber cement so you can remove it later if you're not satisfied.

Some Flyer guys have found that the best replacements are pads th emake themselves from paint pads, the type designed for use instead of paint rollers.  It is critical that the pads be shaped correctly and that the "hairs" are pointed at the correct angle, as that is what determines if the smasher (or cow, or passenger, or brakeman) turns clockwise or counter-clockwise).

I have bought pads from Doug Peck at Portlines for both cattle, walking boxcar guy and Gilford people but he has them for "Billy" also.  As noted above the direction of travel, is determined by the direction of the knap.  Dougs are self gluing and can come off.
