Well greetings fellow survivors-I type this from my locked-room bed in Mentor cottage hospital ,with the two fingers I retain the use of.   Have just checked the medical card at the end of the bed and feel that the volume of red ink and exclamation marks used may be excessive, although they are feeding me more drugs than a chimp in a govt research lab so who knows...........

Only 2 questions-did we win & did the rest of the team make it out in time...Question [?]

Leon-please get the guys a drink on my tab if you would-good man Thumbs Up [tup]

Right-to the business of the day:-

ROB-Sounds like an excellent w/end up at Halton County--good to see the `Reaperman` car earning it`s keep...As to the tour...never say never !!-stranger things have happened  (had an offer tonight to play at a beer festival in Somerset-about 5 hours drive away.    -only problem is,will they cough up $1500 to have us.....Question [?]-building up quite a network of contacts all over the place thru Myspace and the like...)

ERIC-To be honest,I have no idea how `Sir Drefaldwyn` ended up at the W&LLR-best guess is that as it is a 30" gauge line (uncommon over here) they were forced to look overseas for additional power...will do some browsing, see what I can dig up

PETE-Sign - Welcome [#welcome] home dear boy-you have been sorely missed-hope the trip was all you had hoped for Question [?]-now come and join me in nicks nitpicking corner for a moment-I think you may have confused `Free`s "All right now" with the Stones cover of B&S Womack`s "all over now" (oh for goodness sake, somebody shut him up I hear you all cry,and rightly so.......)

MIKE-Spain is a fairly short hop from here-it actually takes longer to drive to the airport at Cardiff than to fly to Bilbao...Confused [%-)]---Basque Country fascinating place, local population even crazier than the Welsh-real nutters nutters Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

DOUG-Thank goodness you made it out--rather lost track of you after the second bout of small arms fire-The memory of you charging the 6`6",450lb bulk of slope-head,armed only with an ice-bucket,is one that I will pass on to my grandchildren..........................

DL-UK-Most excellent news from your quarter  Thumbs Up [tup]-Dare one hope that we are,in some small way, entering a new age of enlightenment........Question [?]Question [?]--I`ll organise some suitably posh nibbles to go with the champers (Boris,Copperkettle---the red folder on the top shelf ,next to the stereo-make some of everything from pages 6 thru 11....NOW.!!! )

LARS-How ya doin mate-enjoying the trip Question [?]-How come I can still see you, even though you are several thousand miles further away........Question [?]Question [?]---nurse,more of those pills please.....

JAMES-Congratulations on your medal Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]-having seen the pics I think it is thoroughly well-earned,nice piece of work mate--those FP9`s are quite something as well-couldn`t believe the detail on that `A` unit (winterisation hatches, red & white top h/light,metal wipers-) Man,lady luck sure smiled on you this week-delighted for you-enjoy them Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]--nice layout pic as well-gives a good `feel` for the whole project-sensibly manageable size---Are you going for any staging or does everything live out in the open Question [?] -I can see it getting quite crowded without a fair amount of self-discipline

O.K-not sure what model pix I have available that havn`t already seen the light of day but lets have a browse anyway......will just get one of the porters to sneak this note out whilst the officer on duty is having his meal break, back in a bit

G-day captian Tom and all present.

Well I am back.

I see that Tom is out this week. But As long as he keeps the Model RR around I will be posting pics every Wednesday. But since I have never been here when Tom is out maybe someone could give me a heads up on how it works around here.

I am glad you liked the elevator Mike, infact you will like it when I am done adding in all the scenery and when the elevator is weathered. I also got a little note from Eric who told me That I should get a couple of swift trucks for the layout. I gave it a bit of thought and I think I might do so.Yeah!! [yeah] I do like trucks and a couple of Swift trucks would make the layout more realistic.

Nick- I am glad you like the elevator. Now it should give some inspiration to those that need to build there layouts still. I've still got quite a way to go on mine but it's coming around slowly.Thumbs Up [tup]

Buddcarr and Coalminer also thought the elevator was cool too. Now If you have a layout.. Add on!!Big Smile [:D] I like to add as much detail as I can to make it look as real as it can be.

DL-UK- I noticed your news report on the man doing his thing in passeneger cars!Dead [xx(] What in the world was on his mind.. exceptDunce [D)]. You would think he would have had the common sence "NOT" to do that.

Anyway I think I will add my portion of the model pics to the thread.

This is the winner car that took best in show.

This the underbody to the car. I don't think you can see the pipes really well but they're under there.

This is the car along with the medal.

The medal.

Here are the F-units I bought. They are sure nice. FP9s.

The front view of the FP9.

This shot was taken a few months back gut it gives you an ides of what it looks like minus all the buildings and scenery and a couple of changes.

Happy railroading!!

James

"OUR" PLACE - ONE YEAR of talking Classic Trains in an adult environment!
Posted by LoveDomes on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 1:57 PM
G'day Cap'n Tom and fellow travelers at the bar!

'Tis I, the Larsman, checking in from the left coast as promised. Ruth, set 'em up on me and I'll take whatever brew is on tap #1 for Oktoberfest! Thumbs Up [tup]

Really, really "different" around here without the bossman. In spite of the return of Wolfman Pete to the fold, we aren't clicking on all cylinders lately. What in the world happened to the Theme of the Day yesterday?? I had been prepared to offer up my book covers, but alas - no one had kicked off the event. Good thing Cap'n Tom decided to postpone it a week - MONON next Tuesday!

I won't make a comment on the
Darts Challenge from last night until we get the "official report" from CM3 I'm Not Shane! (hmmmm - what have I missed? Thought we'd see that early this AM. Hope the 'reporter' didn't wind up in the 'slammer' over in Can-Am Mountain Village. <ooooooh>) Tonight should be a great event at "Our" Place . . . hope to see some of you guys there for it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good to see Cap'n Tom all the way from far flung Nova Scotia. Logging on to this forum seems to be quite the challenge, as I have had my share of woes out here on the left coast too. Don't want to "hog" the computer from the family that uses it - so my time is rather limited.

Hey guys! I have taken note of a few of you who have departed from the decorum around the joint. I'm not authorized to TWEET you guys, however - some of you aren't greeting the barkeep (Cindy during the days and Leon at night) nor are you buying a drink or food. So, what gives Question [?] Let's NOT turn this into anything resembling the other sites out there.

Cardinals are lookin' good and my guess is our Mentor is smiling all the way back from Nova Scotia. Have to hand it to 'em, they really have risen to a higher level during the post season and the games are exciting. They were in the one they lost and could've pulled it out in the 9th - that speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned. No predictions outta me - just am glad to see that there won't be any "sweeps" - two years in a row was enough for me!! Thumbs Down [tdn]

Ok gents, I gotta skedaddle. My return has not been solidified and more than likely it will be sometime next week. I'll try to get back on line before week's end.

Until the next time! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good morning gang! Anyone see Nick? Took me awhile to find the Our Place building this AM. Did you know that there is a pile of crushed cars all over the layout where it used to be located? The Mentor Bakery still made their delivery to the old location, so I picked-up all the pastries I could jam into my bike bag and pockets and brought them here. Don't use the johns, as I don't think there is any water. Couldn't login to the forum yesterday in spite of many attempts. First time that's happened to me. Perhaps sacrificing my Trains subscription to the gods might help. Got to be running to job#1, and later have financial papers to deliver to the loan gods, but I'll be back!

Clown [:o)] There were two carrots walking down the road, a big carrot and a little carrot. On the other side of the road they see their friend cabbage in his cabbage patch.
Big carrot says: "Let's go visit cabbage on the other side of the road."
Little carrot says: "But there is so much traffic here I'm afraid I might get run over."
Big carrot says: "Nonsense, just wait for a break in the traffic and run as fast as you can."
Big carrot sees a break in the traffic and runs over to cabbage. He then calls to is friend to try. Little carrot gets ready, sees a break in the traffic and runs across the road. Unfortunately there was a
big truck coming and little carrot gets squashed in the middle of the road. Big carrot feels really bad and scoops his friend up and takes him to the hospital. The doctors perform emergency surgery.
After several hours the doctor comes out. "I have some good news and some bad news."
Big carrot says: "Ok doc, go ahead, I can take it."
The doctor says, "Well the good news is that your friend is going to live, but the bad news is he's going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life."Clown [:o)]

G-day Captain Tom and all present!

My computer is Having some problems!!SoapBox [soapbox] I hate this thing, Can't wait for my laptop!

So this is going to be quick. Sorry that I am not naming people tonight. But I will tomorrow.

I came back from a good show.

I picked some things that I thought I would never get.

A few Accurail box cars. Two Northern Pacific and one Milwaukee road. Nice cars. Already built up.

Then the winner for the year. I got a set of A-B Northern Pacific FP9's. Made by Athearn Genesis. There regular price is set at 270 some dollars and I got them for 125 dollars!!!Shock [:O]

I couldn't believe it!! I also picked up a U33C in the burlington northern paint scheme. Made by Atlas. Nice loco.

Then this year I decided that I would enter the plastic contest that is held at the show. So I put in an Accurail Bilevel open auto rack that I built up. I also added a lot to it. All the under body air pipes and two grab irons that run the length of the car. And then put some weathering to it so that it looked used. I was surprised to fing out later that day I had won Best in show for the railroad portion of the contest!!!Big Smile [:D] I couldn't believe it. It was great. I will have pixs posted tomorow.

Then I came home.

Sorry for the brief message.

Happy railroading!!Smile [:)]

Hi Tom and everyone, a round for the house.

Pete, welcome back.

Doug, thanks for the Chicago pictures.

Rob, glad you got a good crowd at the museum on the weekend. Hope they appreciated all your work to restore and preserve.

Eric, according to the photographer's notes it took 5 minutes to refuel the Super Chief.

Nick, Spain, too? I envy your travels.

CM3, you're imagining things, and wildly. That is, if you believe your readership can define crepuscular.

Good Afternoon Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please, round for the house and $ for the jukebox.

Snow here today and !@#$ cold this a.m.  Have been busy outside (of course) but am back inside for now.  Looking forward to another full day of it tomorrow.  Monon is not a topughie, but we have been busy covering the darts tournament so the railroad will have to wait a bit.

Since Mentor operates in a parallel time zone, here's a report on festivities leading up to the first game of the tournament.

I Love a Parade

Greetings again from our observation deck (aka Immodium Acres) high atop Majestic Mount Mentor, where we gaze out over the crepuscular crushed catapult cogs that are still smoldering behind the Second Class Saloon. The first contest is finished (and it looks to this reporters red rimmed eyes that so are many of the contestants).  But let’s begin at the beginning.

Some of our more stalwart readers may remember a few days ago that this reporter managed an exclusive interview with Man Mountain Mike.  The subject was the stacks of lumber, coils of rope, and many used vehicles stacked behind the Second Class Saloon.  You will also recall (yeah, that’s likely!), that your intrepid reporter found blueprints for a catapult.

Well, our suspicions were confirmed.  The Second Class folks somehow managed to cobble all of these pieces together into a working medieval monstrosity.  It was, however, carefully hidden under a tarp which was further camouflaged by huge piles of empty beer cans.  Your reporter’s surmise is that the Second Class Trogs were working on this infernal machine while the Our Place patrons attention was distracted by the activities that occurred at the barbeque and pep rally.

It was now time for the pregame parade to the Second Class Saloon.  The boys were formed up and the cheerleaders were in good shape (oh, yeah!), and the parade stepped off (make that fell off the porch) right about on time – sort of like the Mentor Street Railway..

A sudden crash from behind the Second Class Saloon, and the tarp and beer cans fell away, revealing the catapult in all its majesty.  The next thing we knew the parade was under fire from a hail of crushed Gremlins, Pacers, Edsels, and Corvairs (where did they find all of this stuff?)  All participants scattered as the crushed cars cascaded crazily from the clouds.

After awhile it was clear that the Second Class Catapulteers were beginning to get the range of the Our Place building.  However, the Our Place folks had a trick of their own.  You will recall that the railroad had sort of hosted the pre tournament barbeque and pep rally.  The Our Place cheerleaders somehow (we will not tell) managed to bribe the Mentor section gang into raising the Our Place building and placing crib blocks, freight car trucks (roller bearing of course,) and rails under the structure.  When the barrage began, the crew fell to with a will.  Awk flew forward observer duty and spotted the trajectories of the crushed cars as they rained down.  The track crew pushed and pulled the building “just enough” to avoid the hail of Gremlins, Pacers, Edsels, and Corvairs.

The situation ‘twas indeed ‘parlous as Awk had disappeared.  It was then that a flight of Spads from the Greater Mentor Vintage Flight, Balloon, and Social Club appeared.  Awk was in the first plane, calling down a hail of suppressing fire upon the catapult.  A humming, buzzing, sound filled the sky and the Zeppelin appeared floating lazily over the field of conflict.  For once, Boris did something constructive.  He lobbed a Molotov cocktail (made of something from the never-ending Oktoberfest punch bowl) from the Zeppelin into the turntable pit.  There was enough ‘oomph left in the turntable pit from the beans that a massive explosion followed.  Given the terrain around the Mentor freight yard, the explosive forces propagated in such a way that the catapult was destroyed.  What a way to start the tournament!

I have seen enough to know I have seen too much; back to the studios high atop Majestic Mount Mentor.

work safe

Good morning everyone. Bit of a slooow day today but that is to be expected with our corps off galivanting around the world, unfortunatly not all on pleasure trips.

Eric-You must find away to entice the bikini team over by this evening, we could use the extra "support" this evening , a "leg" up if you willShock [:O]Tongue [:P]Wink [;)]Those shots of the street railways in Chicago are something else aren't they. Imagine how many times those exact scenes were played out accross the country and up here in Canada, when the trolley line craze was at it's zenith.Slowley but surly it seems they are making a bit of a triumphal comeback in alot of the bigger cities downtown cores, mind you the costs are alot different as is the equipment, the variety will not be there.

Well still looking for any and all submissions on the Monon ,our theme line du jour today. It will be a tough one but I believe that I did find a small contribution that I will get to in a moment or three.

Ruth another extra large thermous of coffee and a number three if you will, yes the side of saurkraut will be fine with it, espeacially if it's Helga's home brew.Shock [:O]

Good Morning Captain Tom and gentlemen!

Ahh, Thank You Leon, you know exactly what I want. Just like the girls at Cracker Barrel!

A new week and tomo..., today it will happen. Our "Super" darters will smash the opposition at that other place, whatever it is called. Second Class Saloon, I believe. I have already set the correct channel on the TV, Animal Planet. Hey, Leon. Give me a frosty sixpack for the game.

Doug – Thank you for helping me with the link! Nice looking signs! I would say that the price was right! I suppose you will hang them on the wall in the new house. I am afraid I can’t help you with with the translation fo Santa Fe. My Spanish is extremely poor. Interesting pictures from old times in Chicago! The Halsted and Grand Avenue intersection was indeed complicated. I guess it is long gone now. Tracks removed or paved over. The pictures of Chicago Railways being built remind med about what it looks like in downtown Phoenix now!
Now I know what my doctor meant when he said to me “Let’s see how it develops” in mid September. I better print that for future use.

Tom – You found the right film, Tom! The Pride of St. Louis! Hopefully you can extend that title to the entire team after the World Series this year. Thank you for the link to my pictures. I had planned to add more about the history of the Swedish State Railways but the sudden visit from Sweden made it impossible. Nice pictures from Kansas City! Nice diners, I love to have something to eat while I am traveling by train.

Mike – Interesting (to say the least) picture from Albuquerque, taken the same year I was born. I wonder how long it took to refuel those units?

CM3 – The Giants did well tonight! Certainly not like the AZ Cardinals last Sunday.

DL – Disgusting behaviour by that man. I was operating a commuter train once where a man did the same thing in one car. But he was caught right away thanks to other passengers.

Nick – Glad you liked the pictures. The triple iron ore haulers (Class Dm3, tractive effort 940 kN) are now slowly being replaced by even more powerful locomotives, Iore, a twin unit electric(tractive effort 1,350 kN).
More pictures of narrow gauge! Thank you! Using a German locomotive! How did that end up there?

Rob – I am sorry I have to disappoint you. The sudden visit from Sweden was not a member of the bikini team. It was a friend (and his wife) who is a locomotive engineer. Life is rough. Narrow gauge is for me the same as the good (?) old times when people were friendly and still had time to chat a little, whenever they met. So I’ll take the blame. Let me know if and when you have figured out how that poor moose got the extra decorations.

The TV is on, let the battle start! Good beer, Leon.

Good evening Leon , a tankard or two of the fine German Pilsners that we brought in if you would please. Oh and here is a sack of quarters for Her wurlitzer, I believe that it's been quite a while since we heard the Canadian Railroad trilogy in it's entirityBig Smile [:D] Sorry that I was a tad unavailable this weekend  it was Spooktacular weekend # 1 at the museum. At least a thousand through the turnstyles ! Thumbs Up [tup] hopefully the last night show next saturday will be as big of a hit as well. So yes I will be scarce next saturday, I'll be running the Reaper express at the museum

Tom-I know that by this point you are well into your sombre visit to Halifax , let me just reiterate Nick's sentiment on this occation, remember the ahppy and good times.Great movie picks for this weeekend as well, and I did enjoy the rerolls you provided us with on saturday Thumbs Up [tup] I'll put that latest siberianmoism in the bank, not sure where or when I will use it thoughSmile [:)] Good showing by your Redbirds, it's looking to be a good series Thumbs Up [tup]

On a happier note , I loved the photo's of yours and Pete's trip. It's nice to see that much classic rolling stock in such good repair, and open and available to the general public at that.

Doug-I loved the three parter from saturday, good shoew and your sunday photo extravaganza was equisite as per always. Thumbs Up [tup] The digs are looking mighty good , hopefully this means better times ahead for you and yours. Just a thought, your JO former neighbour could become a test target for our team warmups this evening .Shock [:O]Dead [xx(]

Mike-I agree with Nick , that ATSF scene is just screaming for modelling Thumbs Up [tup]

Eric-Great photo's sir Thumbs Up [tup] I hope that if your supprise from Sweden is the swimsuit team , that you will save some for the rest of us.Evil [}:)]Whistling [:-^]Tongue [:P]

DL-That just the worst bit of railway behaviour I've ever read about.Thumbs Down [tdn] Sick or not that type of behaviour absolutly can not be tolerated. To your query about hetting to the ACR. I would check the VIA timetables. If Sault Ste  Marie is listed as a station stop then you are in business. Otherwise the closest habited area would be Sudbury, which would leave a 4-6 hour bus or car ride to the Sault.Big towns with air or rail conections are few and far between in this part of the province. Thunder Bay is the next more Northerly city but it's almost 8 hours from the Sault !

Nick-Good to know that you got the dirt on the Second Classes defences. We might now be able to co-ordinate a dedicated watermellon dropping carpet bombing by the H&H 'waffeEvil [}:)]Black Eye [B)]You are still envisioning a triumphal NA tour with the bands Question [?] Stopping in Brantford by chance Question [?]

CM3-I await with baited breath the ,prolificly perfect prose of our upcomming tourney of tourney's.Thumbs Up [tup]Winter hasn't quite showed it's head around here yet.We didm get a bit of driving hail this morning but the temps are staying in and around a crisp 40F.

Right, back again-Leon,another bottle or three of that wonderful Czech Pilsner if you please and another round for the chaps--looks like the last minute practice night has been an unqualified success Approve [^]--the dart board has got more arrows sticking out of it than Gen. Custer 2 hours after his last big mistake, the picture of Dubya hanging next to it is similarlry well perforated and Boris is wearing his wounds as a badge of pride (bless him.....)

Now then-ERIC made the fatal mistake of showing an interest in Brit narrow gauge trains so you can blame him.....Whistling [:-^]...Tonights tour around `Merrie Olde` takes us up into the marches-the debatable land that separates England from Wales, more specifically the Welshpool & Llanfair light Railway.

Running between Welshpool & Llanfair Caereinion (nr Newtown in Powys, for those that are interested) this line is unusual in that it was built as a common carrier, rather than to exploit any mineral resource. It was taken over by the G.W.R in 1923 and lost it`s pass. service in the `30`s

The original engines (Beyer-Peacock 0-6-0t`s) both survive (pix next week) and are augmented by a former Sierra-Leone rly Hunslet 2-6-2 (similar to the W.H.R " Russell" seen previously) and a former Feldbahn 0-8-0t

O.K:-pix-------

13togo.jpg" border="0" />

Here is " Sir Drefaldwyn",the former Feldbahn 0-8-0t ,easing across the grade crossing at Castle Caereinion and into what was a passing track but is now a stub siding

14togo.jpg" border="0" />

Starting out towards Llanfair Caereinion again with a mixed bag of ex- Austrian & Sierra Leone cars

scan0008-1.jpg" border="0" />

A clumsy attempt at a panoramic shot--the building on the right is the old signal box,on the left is a freight/tool store and I`m standing more or less where the stop block of the original freight spur used to be

scan0007-1.jpg" border="0" />

Another 4-in-1 here, from top left we have     1:-the obligatory diesel shunter sitting on the headshunt at Llanfair Caereinion with S/L coach in tow      2:-facing the other way-original loco`s "The Earl" & "The Countess" sitting on the spur       3:-Ex-Glasgow gasworks 0-4-0t " Dougal" at the end of the platform road        4:- Ex Sierra Leone Hunslet soaking up the sunshine

MonsterforTed.jpg" border="0" />

Whilst I realise that this is not a "Classic Train" by any stretch of the imagination,I thought that you might enjoy it .

Apparently it was built by a company who specialised in cranes & marine boilers and it worked in a North Wales quarry-just check out the look of quiet pride on the faces of the two Victorian gents ............................

Right then, off to get my beauty sleep-big night tomorrow, take care boys

Well good evening gentlemen all-Leon a round for the house if you please,a bottle of Pilsner Urquell for me ( change is good for the soul,so they tell me ) and one yourself.

Apologies for failure to provide pix yesterday, couldn`t get server connection Censored [censored]Banged Head [banghead]--Thought I`d slip in for a few quiet ones and limber up my throwing arm ready for the upcoming challenge--anyone care to step up to the ocky for a few practice hands Question [?]

Whilst on the subject, might I repeat my earlier warning R.E rapid retreat from the 2nd class saloon-the area around the car-park has been liberally salted with industrial grade rocket fireworks ( an old Llangwm tradition-every new year is greeted with salvos of these things launched at head height, horizontally up main street....honest.....) and 410 shotgun cartridges loaded with either rice or rock salt, for which many thanks to the ingenuity & free thinking of the boys from the Mentor Nomads M.C.

Incidentally, anyone wishing to further accessorize their T-shirt & leathers team outfit need look no further than Mentor Ethnic Jewellery, where the lady of the house,Miss Lavender-Rose,is displaying an exciting new range of combined mood-ring/knuckle dusters hand crafted from Mexican silver and tuned to the wearers personal Aura.

Right Leon, lets have some more beer & crank up Herr W. whilst I get down to the serious business of the night:-

CM3-Yet more marvellous reportage -the mining industry`s gain is truly the world of journalism`s loss Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]--N.B.-would agree R.E. Boris`s contribution to "Paint it black"-anything that gets him near a washtub is good for me....My own recollections of the performance are sowewhat hazy as I suspect it took place whilst DOUG & I were beating out the small fires on each others clothing with handy lengths of planking

DL-UK-Nice link to the Radstock museum site Thumbs Up [tup] (although they seem to have confused Weymouth with Bournemouth and Birmingham with Manchester r.e. the Pines Express....Confused [%-)].......)  R.E-the O.N.R,havn`t ridden the route, but am a great fan of the line and get daily pix and message board submissions forwarded to my E-mail-have picked up loads of useful info ,mostly by pestering the other  members (was seriously considering modelling a portion of the line until I got some station plans that showed how big the layouts are--since I am regrettably without a sports-hall sized model room.................)      Normal formation on the Northlander ( To.-Cochrane) is GP38-2,train heat unit (converted F7b) 2/3 coach cars plus f/s car.           It used to be possible to do the O.N.R & A.C.R in one trip ( I have a 196x something article from the railway magazine which describes it,which I will happlily scan in and forward ) but since the withdrawl of the Cochrane-Hearst pass. service this no longer happens....................unpleasant Grauniad article-probabally some poor `care in the community` type who hasn`t taken his medication..............................P.S-good job done in the galley the other night Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]...fear is the key...

JAMES-Hope the weekend wasn`t too traumatic-nice layout shots, that grain elevator is a truly eye-catching feature-suprising the impact that a very tall structure can make on a layout-we tend to loook at models in terms of just length & depth--nice work mate Thumbs Up [tup]

BK &LYDIA-Hannah is total thrill-sucker-prospect of small aircraft flight would be almost too much for her to bear-when we flew out to Spain last year her principal comment was "Can`t it go faster...."....waaaaah

DOUG- Secrist Towers looking mighty fine-seems almost a shame to let the company loose on a house warming party (have checked the calender and would you believe it-it fits right in with our planned U.S tour with the band........) A fine ( if somewhat gloomy ) "fireside tale"-one wonders what coverage it would have had ,had there not been `important` people aboard............or is that just me being cynical..Fascinating pix, both from your signs and the street lines Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup] and the `docs` and `things to ponder` both caused much giggling--good work all round mate !!!!!!!

MIKE-As ever ,a splendid follow up with the URL`s-that pic of the `Super Chief` at Alberquerque is just crying out to be modelled Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC-A fine spread of pix there mate ( and thanks to both DOUG & Captain [4:-)]Pirate [oX)]TOM for providing links ) loads of interesting stock that I hadn`t seen before,as well as some that rang some bells-nice shots of the buses as well-most of the Scania vehicles we see over here are lorries---that big triple-unit Iron ore hauler looks like a monster.....

Captain [4:-)]Pirate [oX)]TOM-Unlikely that you will see this ,given the time lag and all,but enjoyed the close-ups of the Budd cars-no excuse for getting the details wrong with pix like that Thumbs Up [tup]...Our thoughts are with you during the next few days mate---celebrate the good memories,we shall all raise a glass at the appropriate moment..........................

Right, lets get this lot on the board and go find some delayed sunday pix

back in a bit

Hello there bar keep. Pint of cider for me please.

Yes, Tom - Woodside ferry was the one I was thinking of - I had thought it might give a different perspective on the Halifax skyline - sounds like it is less highly rated given your comments.

As per Tom and Rob's comments

On ONR Toronto northwards looks like only way is an overnight in seated accom - nothing luxurious about that but maybe you take what you can get.

I've heard of the Algoma central route - and see the times in my Thomas Cook world wide train timetable - it sounds interesting and scenic - anyone done the run - presumably from Toronto you head west on VIA then connect with it (ACR) at a releavnt location. I also see a passenger line in north Quebec - isolated from the VIA netwrok int he north east of the province - anyone rode that line?

Just seen this particulalry unpleasant report in the paper today:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/crime/article/0,,1929486,00.html

I trust those street car regs had a special section for that sort of thing. Lets hope the railway police catch up with him sharpish.

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present:

First snow of the season this a.m.  The K-9 Korps has moved into winter quarters, but I imagine that they will reappear because it’s rare for it to be this cold here this early.  I watched the Pittsburghs shoot themselves in the foot yesterday.  The Steelers quarterback looked like he got hammered by the 3:15 Sunday only Mentor local.  My boys play Dallas this evening.  St. Tiki, pray for us!  The Cardinals go home 1-1 which is o.k.

A few comments, etc.

Rob – Thanks for the rulebook material.

Lars – Keep on keepin’ on.

Tom – I have saved all of the “deathless darts” prose in one long file.  Movies look good.  Maybe we can run “Strategic Air Command” again sometime as that has references to the Cardinals, plus some fine flying scenes.  Also thanks for the car interior pictures.  Safe travels, chief.

Barndad – Yes, they do measure!  Try and get your street plowed in the winter, though!  Thanks for the pictures and the Too Far North comments – they do hit close to home. Nice shots of the ads and signs.  Also appreciated the Chicago material.

The Spuyten Duyvil narrative was most appreciated.

Mike – OMG!  Pictures of WRJ in 1964!  They were great and the Hotel Coolidge as well!  That place was venerable in the 1930s.  I was living in the Republic of New Hampshire then, hard by the Portland Division of the B&M.  It was interesting over there as well.

BTW, enlarge the Delano shot and spend some time studying the freight cars and vehicles there in.

I will be in and out over the next couple of days, so dart reports, etc. may be a little delayed.  But never fear we will have full and complete coverage with bulletins posted as the situation warrants (No Boris, not arrest warrants!)

Santa Fe was originally "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assisi" or the Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi. Ironically bypassed, it got a branch line in 1880. The first train backed into town, 18 miles from the mainline, because there was no wye for a turn around.

Looks like it's just me and you Tom. Nifty pix from you sir. Here's the last of mine for today

Here are more pix of the construction of the Chicago Railway

Concrete mixer in use for reconstruction work on Ogden Avenue

Continuous concrete mixer in operation

Discharge end of continuous concrete mixer

Eight-ton steam roller used for preparing sub-grades

Electric clamshell bucket equipment

Automatic shovel loading a wagon

Electrically operated rail-grinding outfit

Derrick car for handling rails and special work in storage yard

Too far north:

You design your Halloween costumes to fit over a snowsuit.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You have 10 favorite recipes for elk, moose or deer meat.

You live in a house that has no front steps, yet the door is three feet above the ground.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes get filled with snow.

You think everyone from the city has an accent.

You think sexy lingerie is tube socks and a flannel nitie with only 8 buttons.

At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant.

The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun.

You frequently clean grease off your barbecue so the bears won't come up on your deck.

There is only one shopping plaza in town.

You find -40C a little chilly.

The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freezer.

Shoveling the driveway constitutes a great upper body workout.

There are two seasons: Liquid and Solid

Nine months of winter and three months of rough sledding.

Six inches of snow is still considered a heavy frost.

You actually 'get' these jokes, and forward them to all your Northern friends.

Howdy again. Before we leave for Shane's (not CM3) instructors' 7th degree black-belt testing at 2pm, here are pre-1912 pix of construction sites and equipment used to build the Chicago Railway

LaSalle Street tunnel of the Chicago Railways under the Chicago River – view at North end of twin bore

Things to ponder:

1. Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

2. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.

3. Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

4. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

5. The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.

6. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

7. Could it be that all those trick-or-treaters wearing sheets aren't going as ghosts but as mattresses?

8. If a mute swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap?

9. If a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him...is he still wrong?

10. If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

11. Is there another word for synonym?

12. Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice?"

13. Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?"

14. What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?

15. If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages?

16. Would a fly without wings be called a walk?

17. Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?

18. If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

19. Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

20. Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

21. If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?

22. Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?

23. How do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

24. Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

25. What was the best thing before sliced bread?

26. One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people.

27. To be intoxicated is to feel sophisticated, but not be able to say it.

28. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

29. The older you get, the better you realize you were.

30. Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

31. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.

32. Women like silent men, they think they're listening.

33. Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it.

34. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

35. Do pediatricians play miniature golf on Wednesdays?

36. Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to?

37. Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

38. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?

39. If God dropped acid, would he see people?

40. If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest have to drown too?

41. If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

42. If work is so terrific, how come they have to pay you to do it?

43. If you ate pasta and anti-pasta, would you still be hungry?

44. If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

45. Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them?

Good morning again! I just got back from cleaning the stable, and taking daughter#2 on her mandatory driving lessons. Nice to see we have some baseball movies to watch at the Emporium, ad another great Stooges film. We’re not thinking to mach about baseball in these parts … just about Bears.

Here are some rail pix from the Chicago area pre-1912

Bridge over the South Branch of the Chicago River at Lake Street, showing elevated and surface cars

South portal of LaSalle Street tunnel of the Chicago Railways

View at State and Madison Streets, the most congested corner in the crowded Union Loop District

One of the four corners of the Union Elevated Loop, showing connections with main lines of operating companies

The Doctor Says:

"This should be taken care of right away."
I'd planned a trip to Hawaii next month but this is so easy and profitable that I want to fix it before it cures by itself.

"Welllllll, what have we here..."
Since he hasn't the foggiest notion of what it is, the Doctor is hoping you will give him a clue.

"We'll see."
First I have to check my malpractice insurance.

"Let me check your medical history."
I want to see if you've paid your last bill before spending any more time with you.

"Why don't we make another appointment later in the week."
I need the money, so I'm charging you for another office visit.

"I really can't recommend seeing a chiropractor."
I hate those guys mooching in on our fees.

"Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm."
Since he hasn't the faintest idea of what to do, he is trying to appear thoughtful while hoping the nurse will interrupt.
(Proctologist also say this a lot.)

"We have some good news and some bad news."
The good news is he's going to buy that new BMW, and the bad news is you're going to pay for it.

"Let's see how it develops."
Maybe in a few days it will grow into something that can be cured.

"Let me schedule you for some tests."
I have a 40% interest in the lab.

"I'd like to have my associate look at you."
He's going through a messy divorce and owes me a small fortune.

"How are we today?"
I feel great. You, on the other hand, look like hell.

"I'd like to prescribe a new drug."
I'm writing a paper and would like to use you for a guinea pig.

"If it doesn't clear up in a week, give me a call."
I don't know what the hell it is. Maybe it will go away by itself.

"That's quite a nasty looking wound."
I think I'm going to throw up.

"This may smart a little."
Last week two patients bit through their tongues.

"Well, we're not feeling so well today, are we?"
I can't remember your name, nor why you are here.

"This should fix you up."
The drug salesman guaranteed that it kills all symptoms.

"Everything seems to be normal."
I guess I can't buy that new beach condo after all.

"I'd like to run some more tests."
I can't figure out what's wrong. Maybe the kid in the lab can solve this one.

"Do you suppose all of this stress could be affecting your nerves?"
He thinks you are crazy and is hoping to find a psychiatrist who will split fees.

"Why don't you slip out of your things."
I don't enjoy this any more than you do, but I've got to warm my fingers up somehow.

"If those symptoms persist, call for an appointment."
I've never heard of anything so disgusting. Thank God I'm off next week.

"There is a lot of that going around."
My God, that's the third one this week. I'd better learn something about this.
