Good evening Tom and friends. I'll have a Samuel Adams please, and a round for the house. Because of work and a really busy social life, this will be my last post until the weekend., and I can actually take time to read all the terrific material posted by yourself and Al on the B&O and C&O railroads. Really great work guys! I see another "Railroads from Yesteryear" has been posted, and it looks like a real winner!

South Side Rapid Transit Co.’s Car No. 1, which was recently moved to the Chicago Historical Society to be placed on exhibit. Photo by Stan Brandt


On Jan. 19, Chicago’s first “L” car, put into service in 1893 to carry visitors from the Loop to the World’s Columbian Exposition. Dark green with gold trim, CTA car 1 was built as part of Chicago’s first rapid transit service, a steam-powered line that ran from Congress Parkway to 39th Street. The interior has mahogany wood, etched glass windows and rattan seats. Once heated by steam and lit with gas lamps, No. 1 was one of 180 built for the Chicago & South Side Rapid Transit Co.

In 1898, No. 1 was fitted with electric motors, and a motorman’s cab was added. The car remained in service until about 1930, and then was preserved by Chicago Rapid Transit and operated occasionally for historic celebrations. In 1959, the CTA restored No. 1 to its turn-of-the-century appearance, and recently stored it at the Skokie Shops. At the society, curators will repair some of the car’s broken rattan seats, level its wooden floor and touch up its paint.

I had better have one of the strong ales if you have one please.

I was getting ready to post this afternoon when the computer jammed up refusing to answer any commands, hopefully I will be able to post this time. At least before the problem I was able to read the B&O encores( it is hard to believe it is over 100 pages ago since they were first posted). Then there was ALs post on the Chessie and the Railroad from Yesteryear on the Chessie. These articles really are a gem [tup].
AL Do you know if the Turbine-Electric was hand fired or had a mechcanical stoker[?].

A bit of a coincedence on the Chessie, was last Friday going in to Jefferson City there were two CSX locos in the yard there I had not seen any from that RR in Jeff City before.

ROB great to see you back[tup][tup]. Thanks for the kind words for the photos, kindly posted for me by TOM. Sorry there wasnt any trolleys but I hoped you liked the early Electric Multiple Unit cars.Thanks for the info on the foxes and the Encore[tup].

DOUG When was the piece on Car #1written and where is it now, do you know[?].

Just a little on our train travel in the U.K. Most of the trains kept pretty good time apart from the day I was hoping to see NICK when most things that could go wrong did including points and frieght loco failure in front of us and even a 45 minute delay to put off an unruly passenger on the way back [V]. The new Pendelinos seemed to have settled in to service although the inside with some seats not lining up with windows is not to my taste, they certainly are fast with the 82.5 miles between Rugby and London taking about 50 minutes. You can hardly notice the tilt on them until one clear evening, watching the angle of the moon as the Pendelno went through some reverse curves was spectacular.
The fastest train from Glasgow to London with them is 4 hours 24 min. for the 401 miles, with 2 stops. I think that I would still prefer to take the 6 hours 30 min behind a Duchess
4-6-2 on the Caledonian if I could.

Doug Nice photo of a nice car,I'm glad to know that it still exists few pieces of rolling stock really exist from that time.Levelling those old wood floors can be more of a chore than you can know. Our wooden cars take a great deal of TLC espeacially if they have wooden frames as well. wonder if the controller still works,if so it couldstill see some excursion use, wouldn't that be marvellous.

Lars Hey thanks for the welcome back. Tom did seem a bit beside himself. Hopefully with me back I can keep him somewhat smiling.[swg] I always try to hit the site at least twice a day in hopes that Tom can enjoy his retirement as well.[tup]

Pete Those DMU's are quite the piece of work. i've never rode on anything llike your pendolinos. I'm assuming that you can feel their pitching and yawing when they go into the curves. I suppose the closest I have seen and ridden on would be the LRC coaches on VIA's corridor with their airride self levalling suspension. I was luckey enough to ride on them once when an actual LRC locomotive was pulling the train. The loco's also self corrected in unison with the coaches. Well folks i'm off to add a couple of photo's to the old photobucket account so as I have some new/old stuff for next Sunday. Bye for now

WESTERN STAR CB&Q – GN – SP&S Trains 3-4 June 3, 1951 Chicago – Seattle/Portland daily each direction 2,328 miles 56 hours each way

The WESTERN STAR was the name selected for the new stream-lined running mate to the premier MID CENTURY EMPIRE BUILDER replacing the old heavyweight ORIENTAL LIMITED between Chicago and Seattle – Portland. The WESTERN STAR would require six sets of equipment for the slower schedule, the Great Northern Railway not only purchased enough cars for a sixth consist but also added several extra sleeping cars. The WESTERN STAR was inaugurated June 3, 1951 using the 1947 EMPIRE BUILDER train sets and the one new train set. The route of the WESTERN STAR would be longer than the EMPIRE BUILDER route as the new WESTERN STAR departed from the mainline westbound at Havre, Montana and traveled to Great Falls then returned to the mainline at Shelby, Montana and resumed its westward trek to Seattle and Portland. The “GLACIER” series 16 Duplex Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping Cars were assigned to WESTERN STAR service and the Great Northern Railway received eight new cars of this type for WESTERN STAR service along with the original ten for a total of eighteen. Three of the new GLACIER series cars were assigned to service between St. Paul and Great Falls, another two were assigned to overnight service between Seattle and Spokane in both directions in the WESTERN STAR. The following represents a WESTERN STAR consist between St. Paul and Great Falls. The WESTERN STAR became the main train for Glacier National Park scheduled in daylight through the park in both directions. The WESTERN STAR became the train used by tour groups traveling to and from Glacier National Park with many off line sleeping cars added to the WESTERN STAR during summer months for the rush of visitors to the park.

Good Morning Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please, round for the house and $ for the jukebox. This morning's selections are "I've Got the Hungries for Your Love and I'm Waiting In Your Welfare Line," and "Her Teeth Were Stained, But Her Heart Was Pure."

Spent yesterday outside in snow, sleet, ice, rain, etc. Today is very cool, but slated to warm up in the p.m. Gas jumped .06/gal. since yesterday - $2.45 today - Sheesh!

Man what a lot of neat postings yesterday. C&O and B&O material, pictures, car information...too much! For those of you interested in early history of the C&O, see if you can find a copy of Harry Frazier's Recollections. It was published by the C&O Public Relations Dept. in 1938 (at least my copy was), and IIRC, has been reprinted. He has a lot of first-hand information.

I'm sorry this is a short one this a.m., but I gotta get after it. I'll try and get back later today.

Congratulations to BudKarr BK on his "elevation." 'Tis an awesome responsibility.

Seeing all of the B&O information led me back to the notebooks and the boxes. The October 29, 1961 B&O TT had a fine artists rendering of "Sky Dome" on the cover. That was interesting, but I thought I remembered some material about longhaul RDC service in there and I was right. Here's some ad copy and information abt. the "Daylight Speedliner," an RDC train.

Train 21 departed Camden Station (Baltimore) at 9:40 a.m. and left Washington at 10:30 a.m. with a 1:28 p.m. departure from Cumberland. It left Connellsville at 3:32 p.m. with a 4:50 p.m. arrival at the B&O Station in Pittsburgh.

Train 22 left the B&O Station in Pittsburgh at 11:40 a.m. and departed Connellsville at 12:56 p.m. Departure from Cumberland was at 3:00 p.m. with a 6:10 p.m. departure from Washington and a 6:50 p.m. arrival at Camden Station (Baltimore).

The fine print in the B&O timetable mentioned that Pittsburgh had “...connecting service via P&LE/Erie-Lackawanna.” The P&LE station was less than ½ mile from the B&O Station.

That would be an interesting trip -even today.

Again, I apologize for my abrupt departure this a.m. I'll try and visit tomorrow, but it's another outside day; Friday for sure.

Last for Tom - how about this Yogi-ism "He's dead at the present time."

First a hearty congrats to BK Once our wayward traveller returns Boris should have his new stool polished and built-also he can have his car shunted into the members only parking lot by Tex the consierge automotive switcher[:0]

CM3 A hearty good morning to you sir. That sounds like an interesting book,I'll have to look for it. One of the perks at being at the museum is that we do the various trade shows and there's always one guy who sells old used books,we've dug out a number of treasures over the years.Interesting train info on the B&O in Baltimore as well [tup] I'm sure that it will spark some interest with the Boyz. Bit colder and wetter here today as well, our gas prices have been hovering fairly steady at the 89 cents a litre mark as of late< due to change shortly I'm sure >[:(!][B)]

Al Rain nor sleet nor snow never seems to stop the streamliner parade.[^] we are quite luckey to have such a font of info here.[bow] I'm guessing that West coast Dave will pick up on the SP&S info, oculd be the makings for some good conversation.

Now to the order of todays business Pikes perspectives. In my enforced absence from the forums the silver linning was that I have been able to finish a few stalled projects. A couple Brill car painting and lettering jobs and the final bits of bench work for the removable section of layout. Pictures will eventually come<not unlike spring> A couple of url's for those with the want and desire of some traction models.

Two companies Bowser makes HO and O scale traction cars and accessories poles,wire,catenery poles etc. Customtraxx carries the prefab ORR girder rail track as well as custom painting and decaling supplies, Both have links to many other fine underground trolley manufacturers worth a peek if you are interested.

Just a redo of the Classic Steam # 6 The Roustabout fogured that since it's pikes perspective day a typical day in the life of a steam switcher would be appropriate.This first appeared back in November on page 176, enjoy again.

The "Roustabout" was a named daily way freight ( except sunday ) that worked from Kitchener to Elmira and return with service to Galt as required. Power was usually a ten wheeler or mogel from the Stratford shops.Or on occation a Kitchener assigned 0-8-0. The engine would lay over in Kitchener and return monthly to the Stratford big shops for inspection ( no service facilities in Kitchener )

The Van ( caboose ) was left overnight at the Kitchener station on track three, and on weekends behind the freight shed. A plow and flanger was also kept in kitchener for winter clearing of the local branchlines. Crews from Stratford maned this train which ran entirly within yard limits.

The Roustabout typical day as explained in Ian Wilson's to Stratford Under Steam

An engine crew climbing into the cab of the ten wheelerprepare for the morning job (6:30am.)They will work the three tracks of the freight shed at Kitchener before the factory men come on duty.They will call on Krug Furniture, BF Goodrich, Dominion Rubber,Electrohome before 9 o'clock.

At 9:30 the second crew services the engine and heads back east bound for a yard shift , lifting cuts of cars for westbound freight 400 and eastbound 401 both due in by 10:00.As the day progresses they work the Lancasteer street industries again and finish up the day with the lifts lined up for the manifest freights.

Second crew then reswitches the big industries and will head down ( as required to Elmira and St Jacobs and switch the elevators and industreis there. Coal and flour as well as beer will be lifted from breweries and furniture plants along the industrial spurs. Poles for the grand river railway in Galt ( CP electric line ) At galt they cross the diamond with the grand river railwaay and switch Perkins Glue, RCA Victor,Canadain Blower and Forge,Lang Tanning Co, and Schnieder's Meat Packing. This is all on light ex streetcar rail with a perminent 10mph slow order 85lbs rail laid in cinders )

It was a heavy industrial area switched two and three times a day. Still is for the most part by both CN and CPR on their old GRR line.

TOM-the use of Imperial purple for the legal notices section of the gazette just demonstrates the class of the publication-remember,when moving furniture etc. loud swearing really Does help ( something to do with enhanced blood-flow or something...)

PETE-The S+D reference I missed the other night-R.E Tunnels,-Combe Down,just past Bath Jn and steeply graded throughout springs to mind,I sure there was another but the name escapes me.
Being steeply graded,Combe Dn had banking engines working through regulally and unconcious crews were a equal fixture
You also mentioned the West Somerset-visited about 10 years back,nice little run-The S+D 2-8-0 was on site but under repair-got a couple of bad-angle passing shots from the train-will send for sun.

I've enjoyed the running comments, especially since the return of the bar's Ontario Connection - trolleyboy Rob. As you mentioned a few times, Tom things simply aren't the same around here without the full slate of customers.[tup]

Be careful with the moving of this and that, my friend. I pulled a lower back muscle awhile ago doing pretty much what you're up to. The floor guys were going to move the heavy stuff, but I wound up having to do most of it just in order to access all of the wires, cables, and assorted other impediments to an orderly move. Decided to lift when I shudda let it alone. Ouch! Actually, still bothers me and the Docs tell me it will be that way from here on out. Caution is recommended.[swg

ROB The tilt on the Pendelinos is hardly noticeable although some cars seem to ride smoother than others. I dont think the Pedelinos tilt as far as the 1970s Advanced Passenger Train. During the test running ( they never entered regular service) they made quite a sight passing through the curves at Rugby with the tilt working.
Great link with some great trolley photos, liked the Pacific Electric cars.[tup] .In the text on the link it mentions a Boat Trolley from Great Britain running in San Fran, do you happen to know from what city in the U.K it came from [?].

NICK Looking forward to the S&D list. Was the other narrow tunnel on The Somerset & Dorset, Devonshire tunnel [?].
One bad accident caused by the small bore and steep gradient of Combe Down tunnel was in 1929 when one the two now preserved 7F2-8-0s, built specially for the S&D,# 53809, ran away
The loco crew were overtaken by the fumes and the driverless loco topped the grade and ran into Bath yard with the result that 3 railway workers lost their lives.(including the unfortunate driver)[:(]

The C&O for its size would order one of the largest postwar fleets of lightweight streamlined cars ever placed with Pullman Standard. Unfortunately it was more cars than the C&O could possibly use for their passenger services. Many of the cars from this order were canceled before metal was cut for their construction. Others were sold directly to other railroads such as the D&RGW, IC, and B&O. A further group of cars would be sold by the C&O after Pullman Standard delivery some having never operated in C&O service. The C&O would still end up with one of the most modern passenger fleets of any eastern railroad. For coach passengers the C&O would introduce some of the most innovative new coaches of any railroad.
The first of the C&O postwar streamlined trains to enter service was the two consists of the PERE MARQUETTES inaugurated August 10, 1946. These two Pullman Standard built seven car streamliners would enter service between Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan scheduled for three round trip daily. The Pere Marquette Railway was owned by the C&O but operated at that time under its original name. In 1947 the Pere Marquette would become the Northern lines of the C&O. The trip between Detroit and Grand Rapids was 152 miles in each direction with each train operating 456 miles daily. Each of the seven car streamlined trains provided revenue seating for 220 passengers. The trains were painted Enchantment Blue Roofs, Car Ends, Window Bands and Trucks with a Venetian Yellow Letter Board and fluted stainless steel panels on the car sides below the windows. The E7A units were painted to match minus the fluted stainless steel panels. The two head end cars and diesel unit were the only cars turned at terminals. The remaining five cars like the prewar Reading CRUSADER consisted of a pair of Coach Observations with Blunt ends a pair of Coaches and a 44 seat Dining car in the center. The trains were train lined with a Baggage 15’ Railway Post Office Car, Baggage Car, Coach Observation, Coach, Dining Car, Coach, and Coach Observation. The seats in the Coaches and Coach Observations were simply reversed at terminals. The consists were replaced by newer cars in 1950 and many of these original PERE MARQUETTE cars were sold to other roads.

All eight of the above cars with revenue seating 20-23, 30-33 were sold to the C&EI in 1950 replaced by newer C&O cars delivered that same year. The C&O added another pair of PERE MARQUETTES between Chicago and Grand Rapids in 1950 with connecting service from Holland and Muskegon provided in each direction. The Coaches came from the large Pullman Standard order of 1950 numbered 1610 - 1668. A single Baggage 32 Revenue seat Coach 1403 was also assigned to PERE MARQUETTE service in 1950. A similar car 1402 was assigned to the other PERE MARQUETTE train set in 1950; this car was a Baggage 28 revenue seat Coach Combination built by Budd for the stillborn CHESSIE of 1948. Two 54 revenue seat Coaches with 9 seat lounges 134 and 135 were delivered by Pullman Standard in 1950 for PERE MARQUETTE service. The four 30 revenue seat Parlor cars built for PERE MARQUETTE service in 1950 were 1800 TORCH LAKE, 1801 BURT LAKE, 1802 CHARLEVOIS LAKE and 1803 ELK LAKE. The final car built specifically for PERE MARQUETTE service in 1950 was Lunch Counter Tavern Lounge Car 1920 CHESSIE CLUB.

The Chesapeake & Ohio received three consists of lightweight streamlined cars in August 1948 from the Budd Company to inaugurate a new daytime streamlined train service between Washington, DC and Cincinnati, Ohio powered by coal fired streamlined Turbine locomotives. A connecting through car service would be operated between Newport News and Charlottesville powered by streamlined stainless steel shrouded Hudson’s. The new deluxe all coach streamliner named the CHESSIE was scheduled to enter service in September, 1948 but after one delay or postponement after another the CHESSIE was quietly dropped having never entered service. The CHESSIE would have been one of the most innovative if not the most innovative coach streamliners ever built with features never found on any other coach streamliner in America. The three train sets featured Coaches with revenue seating for 36 with an 8 seat smoking lounge numbered 1500-1511 and 1600-1609 as the standards for the trains with all other CHESSIE cars specialty cars except for the 1400 – 1402 Baggage 28 revenue seat Coach combination cars. The 1700-1702 were Family Coaches with revenue seats for 32, a diaper changing room, Children’s Playroom, Children’s Theater, and Buffet. The 1850-1852 series cars featured 5 Roomettes, 1 Single Bedroom, 3 drawing Rooms and 24 non revenue seats in the dome with all space sold for daytime use only. The 1875 – 1877 series cars were 20 revenue seat Coaches with a snack bar beneath the 20 non revenue seat Dome Observations. Car numbers 1900 – 1902 were 8 seat Lunch Counter Buffet 38 seat lounge Cars. Car numbers 1920 – 1922 featured 5 seat Lunch Counter 32 seat Dining and 10 seat Lounge Observation with Blunt Observation end and diaphragm installed. Cars 1940 – 1942 featured a Crew Dayroom 12 seat Lunch Counter and Kitchen, these cars were paired with 60 seat Dining Room Theater cars 1970 – 1972. If the CHESSIES had entered service several of the 36 revenue seat coaches and the 1920 – 1922 series Lunch Counter Dining Room Lounge Observations would have operated as through Newport News – Cincinnati cars. The 46 cars constructed by Budd for the CHESSIE sat idle while the C&O made up their mind what to do with them. Eventually the 20-revenue seat Coach 24 non-revenue seat dome Observations 1875 - 1877 would be assigned temporarily to PERE MARQUETTE service before being sold to the D&RGW in September 1948. The D&RGW after repainting these cars and installing adapters for mid train use assigned the cars to the ROYAL GORGE. The 22 coaches in the 1500-1511 series and 1600-1609 series were sold six to the ACL in October 1950, eight to the SAL in August 1950, and the remaining eight were sold overseas and shipped to Argentina. Two of the 1900 – 1902 series Tavern Lounge cars 1900 and 1901 were also sold and shipped to Argentina, while 1902 was retained by the C&O and rebuilt into Business car 19 in 1950. The three twin unit dining sets were 1940- 1942 and 1970- 1972 series were all sold to the ACL in December 1950. The three sleeper Domes 1850 – 1852 were sold to the B&O in December, 1950 and assigned to the CAPITOL LIMITED and SHENANDOAH between Washington and Chicago. The three Family Coaches 1700 – 1702 were sold to the C&EI in March 1951 the last of the former CHESSIE cars sold.

The streamlined coaches to modernize the remaining C&O passenger services arrived in 1950 from Pullman Standard several of these cars were listed previously for the PERE MARQUETTE services (1403, 1800 – 1803, and 1903). The largest part of the order was for eighty 52 revenue seat coaches of whom fifty-nine were actually delivered to the C&O numbered 1610 – 1668. These cars were built with two compartments seating 26 with a serpentine open divider between the compartments. The reason given for this design was it broke up the tube like shape of the coach seating area. These cars actually seemed more roomy than most with this center divider although in actual fact it was only an illusion. These cars were assigned to the SPORTSMAN, PERE MARQUETTES, GEORGE WASHINGTON, and FFV. Many secondary trains were also equipped with these coaches.

Right,back again for this weeks Pikes Perspective Pitch,my Brit trains stocklist.

First a little background, The Somerset & Dorset Jt Rly connected Bouremouth on the South Coast with Bath,Bristol,Gloucester & the North,giving the Midland Railway a direct route to a popular holiday coast.
The line was jointly administered by the Midland and London & South-Western Rly`s and their sucessors the L.M.S & Southern Rlys.
In the last years before closure the line was transferred to Western Region control.
Most of my stock is of L.M.S or G.W origin with a couple of Southerners and just a flavour of Diesel

Pete, the article on car 1is from The Fast Mail No. 417, February 2006. I just got it yesterday. I can scan and e-mail it to you if you would like.

Sorry to "post and run", but I've got to get up very early to be on hand for the groundhog "prognostications" in Woodstock. You will recall that the movie "Groundhog Day", released in 1993 with Bill Murray was filmed in Woodstock. The "bed and breakfast" he stayed in was actually the home of my friend and flight instuctor. Here is a shot of the festivities tonight, which they call "lighting the groundhog".



hope you don't mind the non-train-related post, but since groundhod day was mentioned, I figured it was ok. By the way, there has only been 14 occasions since 1887 that the groundhog did not see his shadow.

Pete Hey i'm glad you liked those two websites. I'm not sure who or where that trolley arrived from. A suggestion would be to look up San Fransisco's public transit website. They liley own and run the car so you should be able to find out there. Interesting transit system in san fran. not only are the cable cars an opereating national historical monument , but their streetcar fleet 99% PCC come from all the various street railway companies of the US and Canada that operated PCC's. When you ride the cars there they even are left painted for their original owners. You'll see Pacific electric, Boston, Cleveleand ,KC, Toronto paint jobs and on and on, quite neat really and they are all well maintained.

nick glad you liked the reread of the Huntsville sub. No excuses for proper operation now. LOL[;)][:p] Interesting assortment of equipment you have as well, the 0-6-0 electrics will look quite good pulling the Northlander don't you think[?][:D]

Tom Carefull with that lifting. I kniow that the deed done by now , hopefully with out any herniations or otherwise. I've always found that swearing while lifting and dropping bzillion pound TV's is quite therapeudic as well,does scare the cat but she gets over it.

DAYLIGHT SPEEDLINER B&O trains 21-22 October 28, 1956 Philadelphia – Pittsburgh daily each direction 418.7 miles each way 9 hours 10 minutes each way

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad after a weekend rail fan trip using Budd Rail Diesel Cars between Baltimore and Chicago were impressed with the mountain climbing abilities of the cars and it was all that was needed for the B&O to order six RDCs for special service. The new trains to be known as the DAYLIGHT SPEEDLINER operated between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia by way of Washington and Baltimore. For the DAYLIGHT SPEEDLINERS the B&O purchased four standard RDC 1s 1908-1911 and two custom RDC 2s 1960 and 1961. Each of the two DAYLIGHT SPEEDLINER trains that began service from opposite terminals that October 28, 1956 consisted of one RDC 2 leading and two RDC 1s trailing. The special RDC 2s built for this service contained a standard Baggage Compartment followed by a small kitchen and 24 seat Dining Room. To the rear of the dining area was located coach seating for an additional 24 passengers, Each three car DAYLIGHT SPEEDLINER had a revenue seating capacity of 202.

The RDC equipped SPEEDLINERS were quite popular in the early years of operation but passengers still were abandoning the rails in spite of the fast timekeeping of these trains. Between end points Philadelphia and Pittsburgh these were the fastest trains operating between those city pairs.

In 1958 the east end was cut back to Baltimore and the trains operated Baltimore – Pittsburgh only.

In 1963 the trains were annulled altogether with passenger loads having dropped to less than the capacity of the RDC-2 and a single RDC-1, on most days of the week the RDC-2 would have been sufficient.

Groundhog bites Armadillo, Parrot swipes at Groundhog, Pandemonium erupts

The Mentor Village Groundhog, Sir Sleepsalot, was awoken from his long snooze to find that his shadow was showing, thereby sending him scurrying back into his “digs” for a prolonged nap. Unfortunately for those in his path, which included Tex the Armadillo from the bar known as ”Our” Place, Sir Sleepsalot didn’t take kindly to the obstacle confronting him and took a “chunk” of Armadillo tail en route his den. Spotting this from the air, the Parrot known as Awk also from ”Our” Place swooped down upon Sir Sleepsalot and began pecking at both ears until the Groundhog rolled over in a submissive position, whereby Tex the Armadillo seized the moment and pounced upon the unsuspecting Groundhog. Meanwhile, Dilford Stumblefoot, Chief Keeper & Handler for the Mentor Village Groundhog, attempted to calm the situation and wound up in a three-ring circus affair with a crazed Armadillo, a diving bombing Parrot and an incensed Groundhog. At last sighting, the four of them were conducting a battle royal. Film at 11.


BudKarr BK Inducted into the ORDER OF THE STOOLS

BudKarr BK was inducted into the Order of the Stools on Feb 1st . Unfortunately, BK is in Europe and was unable to attend “his” party at the Mentor Village bar known as ”Our” Place. However, the customary crowd of free-loaders and “usual suspects” (aka: customers) was on hand to celebrate his induction.

As has become custom, the induction ceremonies were carried out by the Selection Committee in the Pool Room of the bar. Attendees included the Track Gangs of the Can-Am, CN and CP railways along with municipal leaders, business movers & shakers along with visiting conventioneers attending the Four-handed Games Olympics at the Mentor Village Convention Centre and Indoor Camel Racing Track. The Gals of ”Our” Place were on hand to provide food and drink for one and all, attired in their hot pink and blue bib overalls with RR Engineer’s caps.

BK spoke to the gathering via satellite video hookup, cheering them on with a rousing rendition of, “You’re nobody, ‘til somebody loves you!” sung in the key of FLAT with the emotion of a slug drowning in a tin of salt and beer. BK was last heard warbling a rendition of the Icelandic National Anthem in the native tongue. Quite a late afternoon for one and all.

As the crowd began to dissipate, several attendees wondered aloud where those red marks on their ankles came from, as sounds of “clickety clack” could be heard in the background from what appeared to be a small animal scurrying into an adjoining room. Others were seen swatting at a multi-colored [UFO intent on dive bombing the dignitaries as they ran for cover. It was later reported that Awk the Parrot and Tex the Armadillo were indeed on the loose once again.

(Reporter’s comment: Attending these events is surely hazardous to one’s well being!)

Special Investigative Unit formed to inquire into recent charges of illegal activity

As was reported in the previous edition of this newspaper, several scandalous events have taken place within the Village that have overtaken the abilities of local law enforcement to uncover the facts behind each. The Can-Am County Office of the Special Prosecutor (CACOSP) has formed a Special Investigative Unit to determine the linkage between the hostile takeover of the former First National Bank of Mentor Village by Vito the Hit and his Boyz with the development plans for the Mentor Village Shopping Mall, the threatened extinction of our Black turnip and Sleaze bean patch and the recent “buggering” incidents of the Rug Smuggler sleuths. The Grand Jury has adjourned pending a report of findings by CACOSP, expected, “Pretty soon,” according to an anonymous source.

On a related note, Vito Grammarian (aka: Vito the Hit), was observed frequenting the County Line Massage Parlour and Transcendental Reading Room for what appeared to be a meeting of “family” business associates. Several rather large black limousines were observed quadruple parked at the site of the Parlour trailers. When questioned by this reporter, Vito’s spokesman said, “A guy should be able to get his parts oiled now ‘n then without having the press in his face.” When asked about the license plate’s of the limousines bearing the markings, “Vito 1,” “Vito 2,” “Vito 3,” etc. he remarked, “That’s a bunchacrap, youse got nuttin’ on me, ain’t no law bein’ broken. We’re all here to celebrate,” with no further elaboration. More to follow …….


Mentor Village Emporium Theatre has a Grand Re-opening

The Grand Re-opening of the Mentor Village Emporium Theatre took place on January 9th and was the village’s single most memorable event in decades.

With Hollywood-style searchlights flooding the sky, limousines pulling up to discharge the Gentry, along with a veritable “Who’s Who” from the County and Village, the grand old theatre was revived to life as never before.

With a packed house, the theatre’s first double feature presentation of Von Ryan’s Express (1965) starring Frank Sinatra & Trevor Howard - and - The Great Locomotive Chase (1956) starring Jeffrey Hunter, Fess Parker & Slim Pickens drew applause during and after the showings. Between films, live entertainment captivated the audience as veritable panoply of stars from years past emulated the acts once seen during Vaudeville’s finest days.

The Mentor Village Constabulary indicated that there were no reports of disturbances as a result of the gala nor was the crowd anything but festive and cooperative throughout the evening.

An anticipated confrontation between the Track Gangs and the Boyz from the Bank did not materialize as they were seated on opposite sides of the theatre and kept largely separated throughout the affair.

Surprise guests included Annie Bodie, Female Mud Wrestling Champion of 2005, who presented commemorative plates to the first 500 theatre goers. Foster Dennis Peeding-Bullet, NASCAR contender for the 2006 Can-Am 500, signed commemorative plates for those few who recognized him (her??). Aaron D. Tires and Anita Biernow represented the Motorcycle Rodeo Federation with commemorative Harley plates. As an after thought, it was overheard that perhaps the next time plates are given out, we should do so at the end, as there were sounds of glass breakage throughout the evening, according to Theatre Manager, Drew D. Kurtain.

Our hometown celebrity, Yogi was overheard saying, “This was a great night, we need to have grand re-openings more often!”


EDITORIAL

We wi***o acknowledge the fine work of all who support the efforts of the “Steamed Proprietor” of ”Our” Place in keeping the Village bar flourishing. While at times an irritation to some, the historic landmark building is a source of pride for many others. Generations of Mentorites have frequented the gatherings held within those walls and there are very few amongst us who cannot recall a Friday night pizza with that first “legal” beer when we came of age!

So, to one and all who consider yourselves as regular customers of ”Our” Place, we say – get a life!

SPORTS History

Baseball: Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants, from Staten Island, NY, hit one of the most famous home runs in baseball history, against the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds in New York. His homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning not only won the game, but also the Pennant for the Giants in this third and final pennant playoff game of the 1951 National League season.


Football: The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame comprised a winning group of football players at the University of Notre Dame under coach Knute Rockne. They were the legendary backfield of Notre Dame's 1924 football team. They were Harry Stuhldreher, quarterback, halfback Don Miller, Elmer Layden, fullback and Jim Crowley, halfback.


Basketball: Bill Russell (#6) of the Boston Celtics dominated the professional game of basketball in the ‘60s as no other player did. He reintroduced the art of defense to the game and intimidated opponents by his mere proximity to the basket. Russell received virtually every NBA honor that exists, and in 1968, he received Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award. In 1980, he was named the greatest player in the history of the NBA by the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America. He was exceptionally active in the American Civil Rights Movement.


Hockey: Bobby Orr, considered by many as the greatest hockey player ever, appeared to fly through the air as he scored the winning overtime goal against the St. Louis Blues that returned the Stanley Cup to Boston after an absence of 29 years. May 10th, 1970 remains as one of the most memorable days in Boston sports history. Forced to retire after more than a dozen knee operations, the mandatory three-year waiting period was waived and in 1979 he was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame at age 31. He was the youngest player to be inducted and one of only ten players to get in without having to wait three years. He has been honored with his name recorded on Canada's Walk of Fame. A museum exists in his honor in his home town of Parry Sound called the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. In 1979 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and was voted the greatest athlete in Boston history in the Boston Globe newspaper's poll of New Englanders, beating out Ted Williams, Bill Russell, Carl Yastrzemski and Bob Cousy.


Soccer: Herbert Chapman, Britain’s most famous team manager between the two world wars, is known as the man who created the modern image of the game of soccer. He was one of the first football managers in the modern sense of the word, taking full charge of the team, rather than letting board members pick the side. As well as his tactical innovations, Chapman was also a pioneer of physical fitness in football - he instituted a strict training regime and the use of physiotherapists. His innovative ideas spread beyond the training pitch. He was an early advocate of floodlights, white footballs and numbered shirts among many others. In 2003 Champan was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his impact as a manager. A bronze bust of Chapman stands in the entrance of the marble halls of the home ground at Highbury, in tribute to his achievements at the club.

Good to see that the sleeeze bean patch hasn't been buldozed yet with the warm wet winter we have had those beans and turnips should be a bumper crop this year. Heck Boris may even turn a profit [:O] perhaps some muzzles and obiedience classes for both him AWK and Tex will be afforded this year. Not to mention some somminex for a certain sleeping rodent,mid you it might as well be an early spring winters been a bust this year and it brings us closer to Toronto.

Talk about irony - but let me back up a bit. My wife has been talking about new carpeting and floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Actually, she's been bugging me about it for months. Somewhere along the line, she picked up on what is going on in YOUR house and now is dragging my sorry butt out to the stores to begin the selection process. Oh moan and groan and pain and suffering. The things we men have to do![swg] It's YOUR fault! So, I'd think the drinks should be on YOU! Why not[?] Boris go on, ring it - the boss man is buying![swg]

Got a real kick out of those classes for men. Where in the world do you come up with these things[?] Then those signs were killers for laughing as well. My wife thinks I'm losing it - and again, it's YOUR fault![swg] Thelead story about the Groundhog and all the rest - just a nice way to start the day! Beats reading the real world stuff a thousand fold.

Rob If you are ever down this way, be sure to give a "holler," as it would be my pleasure to show you around a bit. Darned near forgot! I liked that reference to Bobby Thomson being from Staten Island. Don't believe very many people younger than us have a "clue" about the "Shot heard 'round the world," but it was a huge event in baseball.

My family went absolutely beserk over that homer - all Giants fans, big time; except for little old me (at the time!) I was a Dodger's fan. Alas, alak, where was Joe Black[?][swg] Poor Ralph Branca - he never, ever was the same after giving up that homer. So, anyway, thanks for the nostalgia trip, much appreciated!

House is upside down today and it doesn't appear as if the work will be finished 'til tomorrow. Things are moving along well, however with a rather late start, a couple of snafu's here 'n there, well, y'all know how that goes, eh[?][swg]

Lars Joe Black didn't make it up to the "bigs" 'til 1952, so he wasn't on the roster when Thomson killed the Bums![swg] Anyway, nice ryhme![tup] When that happened, it was the first time I ever saw my mother cry. Big Dodgers fans in my family. Had grandparents who lived not too far from Ebbetts Field ... spent many a summer's day watching those "Boys of Summer!" Good memories. And yet ANOTHER similarity - we both were Brooklyn Dodger fans! <yikes>

Rob Seems like you're really "into" the Gazette, so it's past due for some "input" for the next issue![swg]

Lars Some of the "stuff" I've used came from those "silly" Emails that people seem to think have to be readdresssed and readdressed and ..... Anyway, now that I'm in the market for "material," I've begun a file of sorts for "stuff" to use in the paper. I'm referring to things like those signs, the bumper stickers and the courses for men. Glad you enjoyed it all! Thanx for the round![tup]

I'll check back in this evening, but right now, got other things to attend to, like getting Juneau out - that is if we can find a "hole" to sneak through to the door!

TOM An excellent issue of the Gazette[tup][tup]. Will the film of the fracas involving Sir Sleepalot and his adversarys be shown between features at the Emporium, can we get the censors approval [?]. Some great films coming up. Perhaps later Jack Warner in Train of Events and A. Ridley's Ghost Train could be shown.
A footnote to Herbert Chapman after the end of this season****nal will be moving from the marble halls of Highbury to a new ground.****nal have never been out of the Engli***op devison.

NICK Thanks for the list of the model locos a good selection. What is the number of the Black Five[?] I did not know there was a model of the 4-Cor and to show my age I can remember when the Metro Cam. DMU model first came out.

AL Good Streamliner with the RDCs. It is a shame the passenger numbers tailed off.
I suppose a lot was lost to the airlines [:(].

ROB I will try to find a link to the San Fran trolleys. I read recently that the Blackpool tramway in England is considring modernizing its fleet most of which is getting on in years. I really must get there to see the old trams before they do.
