Isn't that trespassing? Can't the authorities free the ROW?

Up until 1995 CN was a Crown Corporation meaning it was run by the government.   It's been privately run since then.    However, in many peoples minds it still is in kind of a way a government entity and would not exist without the governments earlier largese in subsidies.    So I suspect that is part of it.   Also a politician is not going to just take the side of a private company without fully weighing the ramifications of the issue being protested as well as impact to the politician of taking what might be percieved to be the wrong side by society.

So generally your not going to see Politicians take a strong stand on an issue such as this unless the National Interest is directly threatened.    In this case CN can use an alternate rail line to get the freight to it's destination in most cases.   It might be more expensive or take longer but CN has that choice.

Not Good!! Day 5 no sign of stopping... Court injunction means nothing because no one will enforce it!

Suggest we drop this branch line right now.

Problem at hand is the blockage of all trains between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. This will have to be resolved but I seriously doubt anything using force will happen.

Alternatively, we could forcibly relocate hundreds of Natives with less than two weeks' notice, for the purpose of building a dam.  And then not properly compensate them for decades.

Or we could try to ram a pipeline project through without doing proper consultation, as was tried by Enbridge and our previous government with the Northern Gateway project.

Or we could forget to sign a treaty with a certain Band, and then sell the resource rights (above and below ground) to their land anyway.  And when the oversight becomes apparent we still won't bother to sit down and settle with them for decades.

Some truth to that. That genie is out of the bottle now. All across Canada now every speech, every event, sporting or otherwise, all my emails at work are preceded by an acknowledgement of which treaty numbers and whose ancestral lands we are on. This combined with Nation status to hundreds of individual Bands will lead to some serious no good in the future. Some Bands are level headed and consider themselves Canadians, many do not.

Example: This is on every email here at the college

Northlands College is honoured to help educate northern Saskatchewan residents on Treaties 5, 6, 8 and 10 territories and the homeland of Indigenous and Metis peoples.

Its worded not too bad here, others are a bit more blunt. It's actual discerning when it's announced downtown Toronto and before hockey and football games.

Virtually the entire province of British Columbia is claimed as Native Territories.

SD70Dude-- " CN has gone to court and obtained an injunction against the protesters."

Yeah, now try and enforce it.

CN has gone to court and obtained an injunction against the protesters.

I don't recall the Caledonia/Six Nations/Grand River land dispute ever being fully resolved, but at least things have been quiet there for the past few years.

The current protests could have turned out like this:

SD70Dude--- Remember Caledonia? The government caved. It's all political at this point. It's not good I can tell you that and very very tricky.

How long would it last if the protestors tried to block Highway 401?

Via Rail Customers Stranded

Via Rail customers travelling in the Toronto to Montreal rail corridor couldn’t catch their trains for most of the day. Train service was suspended because of a blockade near Belleville, Ont. Seán O’Shea has more.

Definitely a Mark Steyn influence on suitable arraignments for the Band.

I'm feline groovy if you are.

Perhaps deliberate.

Situations can even get testy up here and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band is one of the more successful and level headed. There is zero way the Feds are going to take on the Mohawks in a confrontational way. It gets worked out.

A real challenge is teaching Mining Engineering accomodating English as  their second language, cultural nuances and differences, very tight family obligations ( if the mom has to go to a doctor in Prince Albert the whole family goes), checking trap line days (the whole family goes), blueberry picking season ( the whole family goes) and so forth.

Going forward most positions at the school are designated for Native  Aborginal only, and I sure as heck hope I get an apprentice next year to train. It's a lot of fun though and Native folk have a great sense of humour and have a light hearted approach to life here on this rock.

When I ask a student just when are you going to hand in that assignment the inevitable answer is "soon". You got to laugh!

Definitely a Mark Steyn influence on suitable arraignments for the Band.

That band would be negotiated with at high levels and some kind of 'suitable arraignment' would be arrived at.

That is the funniest Freudian slip I've seen for decades.

Yes, give money to the tribes in order to fix up the housing and schools but actually use the money so the chiefs can have new 4 x 4 pickups and big screen TVs.

No way .. no how. It's all political. There would be no physical confrontation by the authorities. Truth and Reconciliation is official government policy. That band would be negotiated with at high levels and some kind of 'suitable arraignment' would be arrived at.

I say take it up to run 8 with a snowplow of their own and clear the track; push 'em to northern BC where the action actually is ... and leave 'em there for the duration. #walleyesonwetsuweten #imallwetsuweten
