Our weekend ski house was near to Great Barrington in South Egremont which we built in 1968. I recall the New Haven signs on the stations on the Housatonic line but they were removed when Amtrak took over and that was the end of passenger service, which wasn't much as I recall. I do not recall ever seeing a passenger train on that line back then but I was told it was Budd cars.
My sister lived in GB for many years. When the Harlem Valley line on the Metro-North was extended to Wassaic, GB and the entire area around it eventually became a bedroom community for people that worked in NYC and weekend traffic in town was as bad as any other place you could name. My sister eventually escaped to Vermont. Today Great Barrington is just another crummy downtown surrounded by shopping plazas and big-box stores.

Less calendar-oriented (but alas! with less emphasis on free food and inexpensive drink):

Of course being one of the most wealthy communities in the USA helps too as well as having lousy airport connections...
