Someone else just discovered the Amtrak overbookong policy: https://lifehacker.com/how-to-improve-your-chances-of-getting-a-seat-on-amtrak-1836602272
Southwest has a seating policy that if you want to have two seats then they give you a sign that says RESERVED to place on the seat next to you.
From what I read the program goes like this. If the plane is sold out, you have to pay for the seat. If there are still seats available you are not charged for the seat or refunded your money. You can only ask for the service at check in and you have to be fairly obeese to get it (hence I would never get it). It is not widely known Southwest does this.
