I don't know the actual slide mechanism, so bear in mind everything I say is purely speculative.
If it is the entire slope that slumps onto the track, having the wall at the bottom should stop the movement and hold the slope stable for quite a while. The wall might eventually start to lean but it will still be holding the toe in place. Did the original railroad construction cut into the base of the slope, thus reducing its initial stability?
If, on the other hand, it is debris coming down from a slide area higher up, the wall could presumably intercept the material before it reaches the track. Periodically equipment would have to go in to remove the debris but that could be done as part of a planned program.
Almost certainly the wall will have been designed to suit the specific site characteristics after a detailed site investigation and analysis by geotechnical engineers.
Washington state is continuing to add more walls to mitigate landslides. Question will will piling just 20 feet below ground not start to lean out in the future ? PNW ?

NorthWest. Cannot remember that that the line near Vancouver, Wa had mudslides before . Is this a winter 2016-17 unique ?

And again... This is getting rediculous, as there hasn't been much rain in a while. Really late in the spring for this type of thing, but pent-up water must be causing it.
The slides just keep coming. How are the persons affected handling all the mudslides ? Today it is the northline.

They've been turning 14 to 11 at Portland each time this has happened this winter.
Not sure why the latest slide happened, as there hasn't been a lot of rain this week.
And yet, they keep truncating 14 (Coast Starlight) at like Sacramento. Anyone have a clue as to why they can't run to Portland?
Is the rain ever going to let up ? Of course these landslides may be results of earlier rains. And now another near Vancouver, Wa today.
