The "Golden Arrow" ran from Dover to London Victoria. It would have been necessary to change in London to Euston or Paddington stations for a train to Birmingham.

The "Golden Arrow" would have been hauled by a Class 71 third rail electric locomotive in 1970, although in the 1950s Pacific type steam locomotives would have been used. The 71 was a four axle locomotive operating on 750 volts DC.

From Euston to Birmingham 25 Kv overhead electric locomotives of classes 81 to 86  would most likely have been used.
