About 12:30PM Sunday May 8, an Amtrak train...described as an "equpment" train and as "an empty" train...derailed in the East River tunnels. Signals, track, catenary, and third rail reportedly ripped up. LIRR had to reschedule in and out bound rush hours first through today, Wed, now reportedly through at least Thursday. Plus NJT has had problems in and out of NYP each morning and afternoon because of this derailment. SO....what happened? What happened that it is taking so long to clear up? What happened that even NJT, to the west, was hampered, too? What equipment went off the track, for what distance, and what was the total damages? If anyone knows, please let us know.

Empire train 254 derailed due to broken rail engine 714 and 5 cars.
it took several days to rerail due to no clearance in tunnels.
total track damage 1400 feet and 259 ties track is back as of this morning.
wreck crews involved Amtrak, MNCR, LIRR
Thanks, Dutch...I figured it had to be quite a problem since it took through Thursday to clean things up upending LIRR peak services and even causing NJT some distruption. 1400 feet and 259 ties...that'll tie things up anyplace, but that tunnel is tight....
