The F40PH shell is no longer a locomotive and was converted into a control cab for push-pull operations several years ago. Amtrak has about 20 in service and they are numbered in the 90000 series. See this link: http://members.trainorders.com/geoff_s/amtrak/notes/index.html#npcu
Last summer I rode the Amtrak Milwaukee-Chicago Hiawatha. The train had a P42 on one end and a F40PH on the other end. I was wondering if both locomotives were powering the train or if the F40PH was used as a control car. I originally thought that both locomotives were powering the train, but I later read somewhere that Amtrak no longer has any F40PH's in service.
