Amtrak Hiawatha motive power
Posted by Firesteel on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 9:26 PM

Last summer I rode the Amtrak Milwaukee-Chicago Hiawatha. The train had a P42 on one end and a F40PH on the other end. I was wondering if both locomotives were powering the train or if the F40PH was used as a control car. I originally thought that both locomotives were powering the train, but I later read somewhere that Amtrak no longer has any F40PH's in service.

The F40PH shell is no longer a locomotive and was converted into a control cab for push-pull operations several years ago.  Amtrak has about 20 in service and they are numbered in the 90000 series.  See this link:  http://members.trainorders.com/geoff_s/amtrak/notes/index.html#npcu

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Thanks for the information and the link. I was curious about this for a while, so I am glad you were able to explain it to me.
