jeaton Is there any other reason for a border patrol other than to provide "public safety" to the residents of a country?

Customs, immigration, public health

Thank you, SRailer.
There are certain duties for which our governments must take responsibility. These include customs and immigration, as well as passenger rail service.
"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood." Daniel Burnham
Let's get this straight, the Canadian Border Operations were proposing to discriminate against Rail Passengers by charging for their national security services, while letting Motor Vehicles and their Occupants come into Canada at no cost.
With all the push for more environmentally-friendly transportation, we should be encouraging people to move from the auto, to rail. That means doing what we can to reduce the cost of rail travel, not increase it with questionable charges.
oltmannd . Of course Washington State could alway have their state troopers be extra vigilant of vehicular safety of cross boarder drivers. Might find $1500 a day that way. (I must have lived in the South too long.... I'm starting to think like a southerner.)

Right Don: Im too much a southerner now. Almost the same thought and idea crossed my mind. At least you are not a slow as this old southerner.
Common sense has prevailed. The Canadian federal government has agreed to pick up the tab.

I rode that train last summer. The Canadians seem to have their border act together better than the US. The US had us clear customs in BC, then stopped the train at the border to walk thru and inspect it. The train ran non-stop from Vancouver to the border stop.
This whole $1500 a day thing is ridiculous. I wonder if they couldn't barter it down to half that and then have BC and Wash State split the fee. -Don (Random stuff, mostly about trains - what else? http://blerfblog.blogspot.com/)
Because the Canada Border Services Agency is understaffed, hiring/training has been suspended, and they are strapped for cash. Hopefully the Province of BC and the Feds can come to a agreement to pay off CBSA.
Why does the Canadian Government keep insisting that Washington State pay a daily $1,500 to clear the passengers across the border?
