On 25 Sept 2010 we went on a short trip from Manchester Airport to Chester via Crewe; the day was mostly sunny. Here are some pics I got along the way:
Manchester Airport Terminal.
Wide Catenary supports at Sandbach. Evidently this area had once had several more tracks; the greenery has taken over.
Crewe Heritage Centre - I did not know this was here; there was a variety of older equipment stored behind the fence
While waiting at Chester for the return train to Crewe, this Virgin train came through at a good clip
Northern Rail train seen at Crewe. The variety of color schemes was interesting. Planning a trip was a challenge, though, because I didn't know which carrier served which end points.
For anyone who's interested, the train at Manchester Airport is a Trans-Pennine Express class 185 DMU, in the foreground at Crewe Heritage Centre are a few cars from one of the prototype British Rail electric APT trains, passing through Chester is a 'Voyager' DMU, and finally at Crewe station is a class 323 EMU
Planning a trip was a challenge, though, because I didn't know which carrier served which end points.
You don't really need to know who operates the trains since most tickets are valid on any operator's trains - e.g. for the above day trip, just go to the ticket office and ask for a Manchester Airport to Chester 'day return' ticket.
