Steam trains and diesel power
Posted by kenny dorham on Monday, September 18, 2023 11:43 PM

Why are diesel units used on modern day Steam Passenger Trains.?

Is it to power the passenger cars, or maybe for dynamic brakes.......

Thank You

Emergency Power, PTC Equipment, Dynamic Braking

To my knowledge, there are no steam heating equipped cars that Amtrak permits to operate on their trackage/trains.  Carrier business fleets have designated power cars in their normal consists to supply HEP for heating, cooling and other purposes.

Some of the tourist trains are HEP now and they just have what looks like a very simple electrical generator in a seperate and vented baggage car or something.    Does not take up much space for a tourist operation.    Seen UP's Business Fleet power car and from the outside it looks very substantial.

Do all private cars on Amtrak have to have at least HEP pass thru capability even it they uses own power source?  What about VIA?

Private owner cars that move on Amtrak trains are required to meet Amtrak standards in all aspects, HEP, Braking, coupling and any and everything else, these standards are also applied to railroad owned cars when they get transported in Amtrak trains.

I have no idea of the requirements North of the boarder.

Very often (UP Big Boy, e.g.) to stretch out fuel and water stops for the steam engine.
