Campaign train
Posted by Enzoamps on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 5:31 PM

This is not a political comment, and I hope no one tries to get into politics.

But I find it fun that Joe Biden had embarked on a railroad campaign tour of Ohio and Pennsylvania towns on a special train hired from Amtrak.  I thought I'd never see another campaign train.

If I understand, it has to stay on Amtrak routes, so familiar stops like Alliance Ohio are included.

My local late news commented on Biden's stop at Johnstown PA that the train's Conductor was completing his last run before retiring.  The talking point went by so fast didn't catch the details about the Conductor.  Anyone can fill me in?

That's purely political.

So it is, nicely done though.

However, practically speaking I'd have to say campaign trains are really a thing of the past.  The operating departments of most railroads nowadays consider them a major PITA.  Come to think of it, they consider passenger trains a PITA to begin with.

Not only is it objectionably political, it constitutes precisely the kind of smug, trolling presentation that is sure to start responses proscribed by the TOS.

I am tempted to note that when charlie hebdo and I agree vehemently that something is political, there's fire there.

Discussion and pictures of the train's operation: by all means.  Linking pictures that show the candidate on the platform, even with campaign slogans visible on the equipment: still OK.  Propaganda and spin: no place here.

I posted that to show a modern-day political candidate using a train. No other reason. I don't recall Obama using a train, but didn't Ronald Reagan use the Ferdinand Magellan for a campaign trip?

I'm reasonably sure you had no malicious intent; I suspect the problem probably was that you didn't actually watch the thing after you saw it was about Biden's campaign train, and didn't see it was more about Biden's train campaign...

I thought Obama very famously used  trains ... in the primary in 2008 and going to his inauguration in 2009 for example.

If I remember correctly, Reagan used the Magellan exactly one day, on the "Heartlands" tour in late 1984.

Actually I did watch it in it's entirety. Then I posted it. Malicious intent? No. Problem? Not for me. But if  Biden is elected then what happens to Amtrak? I can only assume good things.

Maybe, maybe not, or maybe not right away.

The thing is when special interest groups ( And Amtrak riders and fans fit that category) have their guy grab the brass ring they assume all sorts of magic are going to happen immediately.  As the song says, "It ain't necessarily so."  The DC millstones turn very slowly  indeed.

And '54, I'm sure no malicious intent was there on your part, but you've got to be careful here.   I watched the clip myself, and although it was a good piece of film-making it was  a commercial after all.

Certainly not malicious and I personally liked it.

As a little kid I recall marching down with my class to the courthouse near the C&NW tracks to see IKE do a whistle stop speech in 1952.
