CHI Union Station - Another station with track problems

Amtrak cannot even get NYPS tracks in good shape.  Now Empire Builder #1007 ( due to DS Time change ) has derailed in throat of CHI US .

UPDATE: Train 1007 which is disabled west of Chicago (CHI) will be returning to Chicago for an equipment change. Updates to come.

Empire Builder Train 1007 which departed Chicago on 3/7 is currently disabled west of Chicago (CHI). More information to come.

Appears  Amtrak cannot get other equipment.  Certainly needs to have a spare train set for all the trains starting in CHI.  Of course wonder when there will be enough  spare equipment /?

UPDATE: Alternative Transportation will be provided between Chicago (CHI) & St. Paul-Minneapolis (MSP) for customers due to travel on disabled Train 1007.

How do we know it is a track issue and not an equipment issue?

Amtrak doesn't have 'spare' train sets for any of their services.

When Auto Train gets seriously delayed for whatever the reason, it can take weeks to 'run it back on time'.  Where there a 'spare' available On Time departure(s) could always be protected from at least one terminal on a daily basis.
