Amtrak busing gone bad
Posted by blue streak 1 on Saturday, March 2, 2019 5:58 PM

The CN track is closed from Hammond to NOL due to high water on the Mississippi river.  So Amtrak has een bussing CNO passengers  Jackson <> New Orleans.  However a bus from NOL caught fire.

Looks like the same thing as last year (but not the fire).   A few years ago there was a washout under the trestle crossing the Bonne Carre Spillway, and Amtrak seems to be paranoid about crossing it when it is open.   Last year they also suspended service when the spillway was open.

The tracks are not under water.  They just opened about ten percent of the gates, so there is not very much flow.   I don't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet CN is still running their trains.

Maybe part of the reason Amtrak is paranoid about this is because it was an Amtrak train that first encountered the washout.   The crew reported a rough ride on the trestle and when CN investigated, they discovered the washout.   As I recall, this was about 5 to 10 years ago.
