Amtrak ticketing down

Wow, unbelieveable the Amtrak.com website was unable to process ticketing last night.   Wonder how much that will cost the company?

Where is the ticketing computer system located?

It is still down this morning as of 11:30 AM EDT.  Trying to get a ticket for the "Autumn Express".

Back up now at noon.  Was able to purchase ticket for excusion.

So I read up on another Train website which I am prohibited from mentioning here that Amtrak's Arrow reservation system is DOS based in Windows and is a interface to a Mainframe system that really started life a long time ago as the old Braniff International Airlines "Cowboy" reservation system.     If that is true it is something to chuckle about.     All this time I had previously thought Arrow was an exclusive Amtrak creation, it would be hilarious if they bought it from an airline that was going out of business at the time.

Anyhow I also googled outages and it seems they have had more than one major outage in the last few years, so they might need to replace it at some point as it seems the technology is probably very dated.

Considering Amtrak's continual financial situation I don't find it unusual for them to have purchased something from a bankrupt airline at pennies on the dollar.  When a organization is financially destitute they are always looking for a bargin.  That lack of finances is also preventing the system from being upgraded to state of the art programming.
