So before any of the older folks snap at me....

I posted this under rail passenger because it was mentioned earlier that Amtrak's new CEO was considering pushing the seats closer together in an effort to make them less comfortable and to make a more expensive expanded legroom class more saleable.

The company I work for just changed Travel Expense reporting, they will now allow expenses for expanded legroom seats as well as Premium Economy on all expense reports.

I had hoped someone somewhere, either Congress or American Business would fight the airlines with this stupidity of shrinking the passenger seats and moving them closer together........instead it looks like complete surrender to the practice.

I feel sorry for the occassional tourist, nobody left to stick up for them.

Business capitulating to whom?  Capitulate means to surrender.

Shrinking seats puts more bodies on the plane/train.  If it results in less comfort for the riders, until it causes reduction of ridership, it remains a plus for the carrier.  That is why they do it.  Anything that increases net revenue is not stupid, just undesireable from your standpoint.

The new CEO is an ex-airline exec, so I guess we should not be suprised.  IIRC there is a Congressman who has introduced a bill to set a minimum airline seat pitch.  I think he had introduced the same bill last year.

On many routes, there is little competition. The consumer may have no choice so the airline can do whatever it wants and you think that's good?

Steerage--that's "bring a crate to sit on in the baggage car?" Or is that a seat on one of the levels in a car with side ventilation?

Hard class--that's a bench along the side of the car?

Ahh- the 'ol law of the sea. Ships would be evacuated in this order back in the days of the Titanic. A lot of people don't know this. 

1st- First class ladies and gentlemen

2nd. Ships officers

3rd- second class women

4th- ships artwork and liquor/wine supply

5th- second class men

6th- snooker tables

7th- 3rd class women

8th- potted plants and cuspidors

9th - 3rd class men except Irish

10th- ships crew

11th- remaining passengers. irish men are advised to die. 

Screaming was strictly "bad form" and was not advisable.

I sat in Toledo Union one night waiting for an hours late Capital Limited, and overheard more than one passenger telling others this was the last time they'd ever take the train.  The train competes with driving and bussing, both of which are available to the majority.

Sometimes the profit motive does not lead to excellence, but reduces service to the lowest level.  It all depends on the level of market competition.
