Go to www.amtrak.com.

You will see "Buy Tickets," and under that you can make your choices, selecting One-Way, Round-Trip, Origin and Destination, and date of leaving.

Having entered those, you will be given a choice of accommodations. You can even buy your ticket online.

It looks like the Capitol Limited from Chicago to Washington, DC -- connecting to the Silver Meteor for the trip from DC to Charleston -- would be best. If you buy tickets enough days in advance (usually more than 2 weeks) you can usuall get a sleeper.

You would depart Chicago at 6:40pm and arrive in DC the next day at 1:05pm. Then you would have a few hours to wander DC before your 7:25pm departure on the Silver Meteor. You would arrive in Charleston at 4:51am the following morning.

Union Station in DC is beautiful and is only a short walk from the US Capitol and the museums of the Smithsonian. Seems like it would be a fun trip.
