Some more SC-44 Chargers for you guys!

Hey everyone, here is a quick video of some SC-44 Chargers on Amtrak's Southwest Chief through Fullerton Railroad Days. Enjoy Santa Fe 3751 giving a friendly goodbye whistle!

Slightly OT but "informed sources" indicate that a contract exists between Amtrak and the states for testing of the new locomotives only. There is not yet a contract in place for cost allocation for regular operation so the may be a delay yet. (Not sure if this is a single contract with the consortium or state by state).

Is Amtrak pleased with the Charger Locomotives so far?

Looks like someone is paying Amtrak to run up breakin miles on the recently delivered, Caltrans funded locos.

Amtrak won't allow them into service (San Joaquin, Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner) until some special equipment is installed. Not sure about Caltrain service though.

Once these locomotives are fully accepted and in service, how many Amtrak units will be freed up, as well as any other units?

There are currently seven Talgo sets in a rotation, powered by the five Cascades F59PHIs and at least two P42DC/P40DC/Dash 8-32BWHs from the national pool. I suspect that the F59s will be retired but there is some rumors they may stick around (and I hope so).

At least two units will be freed.
