Hi all,
very excited about this website, it's pretty nice. I wonder if anyone out there can tell me if there's a maximum age requirement for Amtrak's Engineer training program? I am 52 years old but feel as though I may be to old for this type of career change, does anyone have any ideas or information regarding this?
Thanks!
There is not, but you may be passed over for other applicants because of it. I'd still apply as you have nothing to lose, but be aware that they start with internal applicants, so many engineers have worked themselves up from coach cleaners.
Thanks for your input. I wish I would have become a train engineer before I decided to be a commercial pilot. Oh well, can't change the past. I will submit my application and pray. Have a good one.

Youtube has some current Railroad Recruiting Videos including one with the infamous young conductor trainee on a huge CP frieght train (lol....just kidding) but seriously, look through some of those videos and listen to what the railroads are cautioning about or looking for in an individual. It can't hurt. I think most want you to start as a Conductor and then get promoted to Engineer unless you have past railroad experience.
Canadian Pacific Video....(are we sure that guy is 18?.....lol)

Your career as a commercial pilot will likely give you a substantial boost over potential competitors, as you've already shown yourself to be comfortable living on the road for long periods of time; handling millions of dollars of equipment and hundreds of lives safely; managing duty cycles, rest periods and fatigue; and staying safety concious and attentive for long periods of time. Best of luck!
