I got off the #10 CARTA bus and had to walk down a dark road at 800 pm under a bridge to get to the station. There were night walkers everywhere on all kinds of drugs. It was straight otta a horror movie. I thought Toledo Union was in the hood but this is way worse. However the station is a classic 1940s era design. Why the bus does not drop off at the front door is behond me. What did the old Charleston SC downtown station look like? BTW a new station is slated to start contruction Jan 1st 2017

Although a rather seedy area, there are plans to revitalize it once the new station/transit center is completed. The old downtown Union Station was built in the early part of the 20th century and burned down in 1947. It had twin towers and a train shed that all trains of the Southern and ACL backed into.
The old Buffalo NYC station is pretty creepy also. It's a hideous building. Not to change the subject, but there's so many platforms- was there that much rail traffic to justify them back in the day?
The VIA station in Sudbury, Ontario isn't exactly in the nicest part of town either.Lots of dive bars full of scary looking people.
The Detroit MC station is sort of scary but there's no one hanging around it, not during the day anyway. I've heard it being renovated but for what purpose I do not know. The guy that owns the Ambassador Bridge (Matty Maroun) owns it. How the hell does one guy own an international bridge? I can't figure it out. Sorry to get off-topic.
http://buffalocentralterminal.org/ is the old station and yes there was like 100 or more trains a day on a 4 track New York Central Main Line between NY and Chicago. Buffalo was growing up untill the 1950s and was planned to be a second New York City. Buffalo has 3 stations including Niagara Falls that handles 6 trains a day. The oldest is Exchange Street Station which is tucked away in a dark corner of downtown which is tiny for a big city.
The Ambassador Bridge is owned by a firm called the Detroit International Bridge Co., which is in turn owned by Maroun's holding company. The bridge was built toward the end of an era in which major river crossings were often undertaken by private entities. The auto tunnel between Detroit and Windsor is also privately owned.
What's the status of the "New" Amtrak station in North Charleston, S.C.? The link in the original post is to articles that are over 5 years old! They talk about construction beginning in the next year (parking lot already constructed). I have not seen anythig about a "New" station in North Charleston. Just wondering.
