The new faster Chicago-Detroit service needs an extension to Toronto and Buffalo.  This would use the Via route to near Toronto where cars would be switched off and to either city.  Some time ago, Amtrak timetables showed a VIA connection at Aldershot near Hamilton.  Detroit to Toronto would be through the tunnel and 4 hours.  Service to Buffalo would take 5 hours.  This would require some faster running as no time lost for customs.

The extension to Toronto thru the Port Huron-Sarnia Tunnel died years ago.  From Detroit to Toronto you could take a taxi to the Windsor VIA station.  From Detroit to Buffalo you could take an Amtrak bus to Toledo to catch the train, which would be about as quick as a train that has to go thru 2 border inspections.
