It pays for the overnight accommodations. They are not paid for by the employees.   My point is that Amtrak's employees who are away from home are not on hardship duty. Irrespective of what Amtrak paid for the hotel, their digs are very comfortable. As an aside, when I was growing up in Altoona, which was a crew change point for all passenger and freight crews, the PRR had its own accommodations for the Harrisburg and Pittsburgh crews. It included a nice cafeteria.
