<p>I don´t know what´s ahead for AMTRAK - any idea on that is somehow like looking into a crystal ball. As long as AMTRAK´s mandate is to provide some sort of long distance passenger rail service, it will just do that, within the budgetary framework assigned by Congress.</p> <p>We all know that this is no way to properly run a railroad, let alone to develop it into a modern passenger carrier. To do that, AMTRAK would require a different mandate, different organization, maybe different management, but also different funding.</p>
