The proposed Transportation Innovation Act is in the process of being approved for the California ballot come 2014. The proposed act would provide a legal and regulatory framework for alternative modes of transportation such ET3, PRT, and Hyperloop. The act allows for right of way to be used for alternative modes of transport for the purpose of testing said modes of transportation. Finally the Transportation Innovation Act will halt the CAHSR project. If the Transportation Innovation Act makes it onto I will vote in favor of the measure and I urge other California residents to vote in favor of it as well so that the "train wreck" (see what I did there?!) of the project known as CAHSR can be killed and so alternative modes of transport can finally have a fair chance.
ET3 had an indiegogo campaign that is now over that had limited success, but the money they obtained from the campaign was enough.

I do cost estimating along with getting projects ready for contractors. The Hyperloop cost estimate is bunk! It is equivalent to saying dedicated dual track HSR can be built for $2 million a mile. It would seem to be only a scheme to destroy CAHSR politically and leave nothing.

The Pedestrians Observations blog while it is right that the cost was underestimated is pretty much wrong in all other regards. The costs while under estimated pretty much would still cost less than Also ET3 ≠ Hyperloop I can not stress this enough. ET3 is a mature and developed solution and would be another option people could choose. Hyperloop uses a hovertrain and is based upon Rohr Aerotrain while ET3 uses Maglev technology. They are entirely different from each other. CAHSR is itself poorly implemented and poorly planned so getting rid of it is a good idea unto itself.

i second this. There is nothing much technically different from some of the proposals for PRT we considered at Princeton in the mid-'70s. It's fun to dust off the old tropes and set them going for a while, but there were hard reasons then why people wouldn't like the things, and they are equally hard now.
Something that is potentially game-changing for PRT is in the confluence between self-driving vehicles and 'personal area networks' and wearable equipment that would permit near-instant customization of intelligent vehicles at low cost and with very low latency. if 'any' PRT car becomes 'your' car in enough ways, the take rate for closed systems like Hyperloop ought to become much greater. As long as all the Ellison-wannabees avoid the temptation to charge for everything on some cockamamie SaaS model, and re-create the French fax fiasco of the 1860s all over again...
Now, for longer distances, i still think you can't beat high-speed rail. The 'catch' is to make the short-final 'experience' at both ends of the rail trip quick, worthwhile, and cost-effective. i do NOT see a webwork of Hyperloop guideways working in LA alone, let alone regarding the 'other' likely destination pairs (and trip purposes) in a non-Balkanized State of California...

You don't have to get cranky about it. I posted this because it is a potential ballot measure that effects not only ET3 and Hyperloop but also CAHSR. Giving ET3 and Hyperloop a chance to be tried in the real world is a pretty big deal. Also if you don't like my threads simply choose not to respond to them.

I forgot to add a few things the proposition would still allow the initial segment to be built it would just bar future bond issuance. I can't stress this enough ET3 is NOT Hyperloop, they are entirely different technologies. The proposition will allow for both to be tested on initial ROW and then to eventually be expanded to intercity travel.
