Lake Shore Limited...been late recently?
Posted by dcrailfan on Friday, September 7, 2012 12:00 AM

I am planning a trip from Buffalo to Milwaukee this coming October 11-12. I may be leaving from the Fredonia bus-stop getting off at Amtrak Depew. From there I would take the LSL to Chicago and take a Amtrak Hiawatha to Millwaukee. I would then do the reverse when my mission in Milwaukee is complete. My questions are is there a more comprehensive bus schedule available than the one I found on Fredonia's website(It was just the schedule for the travel times surrounding Fredonia's current semester, spring break, holiday charters, etc.)? Also, I have checked Amtrak's site and have found the LSL has only been about 4 mins late this week. Any thoughts on its current record and other ideas for the proposed journey.

Thank You

You're on the right track, so to speak DCRAILFAN....by checking Amtrak daily for performance.  That is what I often do when planning a Ridewithmehenry trip to ride in the NYC or Phil areas...keep track of the delays, etc. for a week or so and even up to the date.  You can't say now that on such and such a date the train will be 100% on time or hours late.   But you can anticipate heavier travel dates by holidays and events . From Fredonia to Depew is backwards...is there a way to go to Erie instead?  No matter, Depew is the Amtrak routing, though.  If you want more comprehensive bus schedule, go to Greyhound and see what they hve to offer.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

Henry6 thanks for the input. I checked Greyhound and their dosn't even come close to Western New York unfortunately. I probably should have mentioned (but silly me forgot to) that CoachUSA is the server for that service between Fredonia and Dunkirk. I don't know of any service to Erie(although it appears I might save a few dollars by departing from there but the figures don't seem to suggest much. Few in this case is the key word. Depending on how the date for my appointment in Milwaukee pans out I just might visit the ticket office on Fredonia's campus or call Amtrak soon.

That's right...Greyhound runs rt 219 through Salamanca while the old ShortLine/Trailways charters run east and west with connections to Erie at Jamestown I think.  Amtrak does have a bus connection up from Jamestown and I think that's the one you are dealing with.  Good Luck and let us know what you end up doing.

Henry6, as much as I wanted too take Amtrak, my Mom wound up driving me up to Milwaukee from Jamestown via Enterprise. Out of respect however, it also proved the most flexible in our case at this time. Thanks for the advice though. The trip was memorable as well as being our first trip west of Cleveland.

Thank you again.
