Texas Eagle Service Disruption
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, August 19, 2012 3:36 PM

Today, as well as one day last week, No. 22 was disrupted.  According to Amtrak, at least for today, alternate transportation was being provided from at least points south of Fort Worth to Fort Worth and Dallas.

I saw No. 21 go through Temple yesterday.  It was about an hour late, but Amtrak says that it arrived in San Antonio 27 minutes late. So it appears that the train did not depart San Antonio this morning. Anyone know what happened to today's Number 22?

With the new schedule for the Sunset Limited and the through cars for the Texas Eagle, Number 422 only has 2 hours and 10 minutes to cut the through cars off the New Orleans train and couple them to Number 22. What would happen if Nos 2/422 were five hours late. Would Amtrak hold Number 22 in San Antonio for three hours or would it send the train on its way to Chicago?

Who makes the decisions regarding whether to hold a train for connecting equipment or passengers?  At what point, if any, does executive management get involved in the decision. By executive management I mean an officer of the company.

It turns out that Number 22 ran about an hour late on Sunday.  Although the on-line status board showed the service had been disrupted, it was only disrupted between St. Louis and Chicago due to track work.  One would think that Amtrak could have made that differentiation instead of showing the disruption affecting the whole line.

Well this might be part of the problem.    The Texas Eagle is now using track 4 not track 5 at Dallas Union Station.    For traffic control purposes it is backing out of Dallas Union Station back to the Union Pacific Control Point  (West of the Station) which allows it to switch to the furthest main closest to to Hyatt Hotel and then doing a runby of the station after loading or unloading passengers.        The reason is part of track 5 is now torn up with the left rail missing.     It looks like they are going to replace it because the tie plates are on the extended portion of the platform.      I hope they are not going to rip out Track 5 but they certainly are not maintaining it as well as Tracks 3 & 4     Tracks 3 & 4 I thought belonged to TRE so this might also be the precursor to the switch to TRE, we'll have to see.     There is no reason to back out of Track 4 as  it is a run through track as is Track 3 & 5(before the construction).      I suspect that the switch East of the Station where track 3 and 4 consolidate to one does not yet offer access to the correct directional UP mainline or is not under UP RR traffic control?
