[/quote] The politicians have been in charge of Amtrak since the get go.  That's the problem!  With 536 overseers (U.S. Congress and White House), meddling has reach a new high or low, depending on one's point of view.  And because there are no competitive pressures to do things better, faster, cheaper, Amtrak will continue to be an also ran operation.
