I have been traveling by rail as a paying rider since 1967. When I travel sleeper, I always look at the menu after the meal, calculate what the price would be if I had to pay out of my own pocket and then leave anywhere from 15 % to 20 % depending on the level of service and quality of the food. When my wife and I go out, or if she pays on the train, she uses the same standard, but being somewhat mathematically challenged, she asks me (a math educator of 47 years) to figure the tip for her. Just my 15+ % !!!!!

WHAT'S  THE  DIFFERENCE  BETWEEN  A  CANOE  AND  A  CANADIAN ???.... A  CANOE  TIPS.

 Just kidding of course.    My usual tip is 15 pct for attendants & waiters.     Unless I receive LOUSY service which I have had on a few occasions, & then I'll give nothing & not even a thank you.

Standard protocol as I've observed it for a number of years...

 

Sleeping Car Attendant: Tip $10 for 1 night, $20 for more than one, maybe $5 for just a day trip. Adjust downward for really, really bad service, rudeness, etc.

 

Dining Car Attendants: Standard 15% of cost of  meal, 20% if really, really exceptional. For "free" meals (included with sleeper fare), estimate meal cost and tip accordingly per above. Adjust downward for really, really bad service, rudeness, etc.

 

Lounge Car Attendant: Don't forget these guys/gals.  Tip of about 12-15% is standard (e.g., 25 cents for a $2 coffee is probably OK).

And, how do you estimate the tip if you are traveling first class on the Canadian? There are no prices on the menus.

Apply a percentage to your estimate of the meal's fair market value or directly price the value of the service received.
